Advice and help with my new 68 Fasty - Always appreciated...

Post by clsmi2269 » 17th November 2013 - 9:02am

Hello All,

After two years of being a member of this site and longingly looking for the right Type 3 for myself I am proud to be the new owner of my 1968 Fasty. :D
My partner (Type 2 Bay lover - now converted  ) has been helping me to get my baby back to as much of it original condition as possible. The interior is amazing and completely original with only a small split to the dash pad (as expected) and a tear to the top of the back seat which we are looking to match up and fix which I am very happy about. All boot and bonnet linings are all there but sadly the trim has gone from the sides.

After spending a £1000 to correct someone's poor and badly incorrect attempt to lower this beauty to a dangerous level on the front only that risked writing it off, it is back on the road and looking beautiful.

I wanted to introduce myself as I know that I will likely need some assistance in tracking down small parts over the years and wanted to ask everyone for advice and tips on the best place to gets parts?

So far we are only really looking for advice on bumpers, steering damper, trim, a glove box lock (the rest in complete tact), Most importantly and the hardest to track down. A correct bolt for the front off side lower arm (Was messed but with during lowing so incorrect one in there)

Can anyone give any good suggestions of where to get parts for my beloved baby both now and in the future?

You have the usual VWH and Machine 7

But ISP west do a lot more specialist stuff, I have a chat with a chap from VWH yesterday and he said they do a range but its not hugely extensive. He also has a late fasty and buys from ISP west, if you spend under $100 you avoid the import tax. TOP TIP :D

When replacing any of the bolts on the suspension - make sure they are the correct tensile strength - very important for suspension.
Most of the hardware is rated at 10.9 rather than more common 8.8.
Also some of the threads are finer - 1mm compared to 1.25 or 1.5.
ISPWest do stock good used parts - including all hardware.
If you measure the length of the bolt, how much thread is has along the bolt and the size - 8mm, 10mm, 12mm - post that as I may have spares - good luck with the project...

Is the bolt you are after for the pinch-bolt? Ther're M10 x 40, but they have a longer shank to bear on the ball joint, and are a Type 3 part. 10.9 grade as mentioned above. They're often chewed up when undoing them without the torsion arms being squeezed together to take the pre-tension off.
It's no 16 in the picture of the front suspension (Thicker looking that that - the very early ones were only M8).

The other things come up for sale on here - a Wanted Ad may well produce results. Good bumpers of any sort are not easy to find, and re-chroming is expensive too.
Steeering dampers are available from VW Heritage - should be able to order from VW dealer and avoid shipping charge. Part number 311425021. £30.10 they list on their website. Just Google!

Thanks to everyone for your replies..

I have a VW specialist who does some of the work regarding the suspension as this is not my area of expertise and wont it done right.

I have found ISP, they are great....thanks to everyone for your recommendations.

it's worth noting bolts #19 and 20 are the fine threaded ones 1mm pitch, took me ages to find one!

Did you get a longer shank than the standard bolt that size and length, or did you get a used one?

I agree.

It would be possible to use a longer one and shorten it - might take a bit of cutting, but as long as you didn't heat it while cutting, and held it by the end you're cutting off, I should think it would be possible.
