Replacement engine number for Rebuild ?

Post by Matthew » 2nd April 2006 - 8:43pm

I'm rebuilding my engine, on a new VW case. It has no engine number. I'm not going to transfer the old number, as the case is not scrap, and will probably be reborn in the years to come.

What have people done in this situation ?!

Engine number

If it was VW recon it would have an X at the end of the old number - no prob doing that with the number that would have been on the car.

If you're changing the spec it would be just as sensible to put Matt-1 or something!

DVLA are supposed to be told the new number if it's changed.

I got some advice from a VW club person who happens to work for the DVLA. As long as the paperwork matches the stamp on the engine, they'll probably be happy. You can give it whatever number you like. Even no number is OK for an old car, as long as the V5 agrees. But he did suggest that if it ever got stolen, it would help it to be traced if it did have a number.

And the local monster engine builder (http://www.funkenblitz.com/) does just that - his initials followed by the CC, then a serial number.

As its an FI engine, I'll keep the U05 prefix just in case it lasts longer than me.
