wheels & tyre sizes?

Post by markymarc » 30th September 2014 - 9:38am

Hi guys,
I want to change the wheels on my squareback to maybe a wide rear skinny front combo?
what is the widest rear wheel i could get on? It has been lowered but not sure by how much! I know it'll depend in the offset etc but maybe if anyone has time to put some pictures on to show me that would be a great help?

Many thanks
Mark

Tyre size?
Is your car lowered?
Have you got any pictures you could post?

Many thanks
Mark.

7.5x17 et37 front and rear no problems.

How do you manage with the standard steering angles and lock stops on the front?

My Squareback doesn't seem to have any adjustments for restricting the lock on the steering, I'm wondering what your solution might have been.

it clears all ok but on the fullest of lock the inside of tyre just touched the inner wing, this I cured using the little metal plate thingies you put over the bottom trailing arm stopper for the stub axle.

Cheers guys for the info, its put my mind at ease with what I'm doing. Any more pictures and sizes will push me on.
As much as I like the mega-lowered slimmer wheeled look, I want mine to look fatter and solid as a squareback van.
Taking my wheels to have tyres removed and refurbished today.

Thanks again
mark.

7x17 cup 1's et 55, I tried a 225/45/17 all round but had no chance of getting them on the rears as my car currently is with its uniball setup. They touch everything inside and out, with some getting I could probably go that big but at the time I couldn't be bothered. I've settled for a 205/45/17 all round and have no rubbing issues. I may try a 215/45/17 next time to go a little wider as the 205's look a little skinny from the back unless I begins to change things around in the back.

I must be having a blonde moment, any chance you can post a pick of this metal plate thingy as I'm getting the nearside front with full lock touching on the inside with stock 165r15s, and don't know how to stop this.

Cheers.

I fabricated something similar when my tyres were rubbing on the body at full lock. Usually the problem only presents itself on full lock manoeuvring in reverse when you can get a graunch as a ridge on the torsion arm grinds against a ridge on the steering knuckle. If you take a look, you'll see where the surfaces have ground away material. The steering stop is shown as no. 8 on the parts diagram at http://home.clara.net/hallvw/type3/T3pbo/T3pb4-6.htm .

It's not too hard to work out the shape to do this job, but how thick a piece of steel would be needed would depend on the amount of rubbing. My pattern was like a pair of wings folded round the arm, and drilled near the ends, with a tab bent at right angles to locate it. Thinner metal tends to be ground into the worn hollow, but may help enough. I see that Konny's is made from 3mm steel, which is probably the maximum thickness feasible.

Thanks guys, mine are missing, we did try a couple of jubilee clips as spacers but it seems these are the right solution, if a little pricey.

My rubbing only occurs in reverse on full lock on the nearside front, so there's probably some wear as you say.

I think it's as much a symptom of the type of steering box we have on Type 3s. If you lift the front and compare the straight ahead steering play with the amount of play with the wheel turned full lock, you can appreciate why it rubs in reverse, when castor plays its part.
