Front brake shoes

Post by vwadam » 28th March 2015 - 7:24am

Does anyone know if beetle front shoes fit early (pre 64) type 3 brakes?

They both seem to be 230x40mm but didn't know if there were any other differences?

I think Type 3 were always 50mm, althought the diameter changed for 64 model year.
If you have something in there at the moment you can get them relined with a modern friction material.

The fronts I have are 50mm and could do with being re-lined.

The rears are listed on isp's site as being the same as beetle fronts 230x40mm. On most of the UK suppliers it doesn't seem to list them as being the same.

Sorry I thought the question was all about fronts...

If your car is before Chassis # 0076300 then possibly, but you'll still need to drill a hole for the handbrake lever.
TBH, If you have the backings I would get them relined. Its not expensive and the friction material will be the best, not the cheapest.

Where would you get them relined, or is it a case of finding a set of vw ones?

Annoyingly there were two sets at volksworld in the swapmeet but I thought they were the wrong part number until I got home and checked.

Friction services in Bristol is who I was going to use.
http://www.frictionservicesltd.co.uk/ but there are other places.
You just need to send them the metal parts, they make up and bond the new lining.

I used Villiers service in the west midlands

They did fronts and rears for my 63 for about £90 all in, top service too.

I recently got some relined brake shoes for my trailer from yelling50brakebonding on ebay for £26 / axle. 203 x 40 so not much different to a type 3

I was impressed by the quality, they came with a full set of springs etc and the fact that the shoes already had a nice chamfer on the friction material. Might be worth a call too
