Full flow oil system

Post by packers1712 » 29th July 2015 - 9:44pm

Is it possible to fit a full flow oil system incorporating a remote oil filter to a type 3 engine without doing a complete engine strip? Looked a couple of type 1 systems but because of the fan arrangement on a Type3 they won't work.
Any help appreciated.

Not really feasible Doug,- It involves tapping & plugging the oil galleries, so swarf is inevitable.
Full flow shouldn't really be necessary unless You're looking at a massive Engine?
I think "Haz" & "Broady" have done full flow recently, as well as Angelo Amato (But His is a Type 4 Engine in a Fasty)
It's the Fanhousing, rather than fan itself that causes people grief.

A Fastback owner in Australia has fitted an oil take off and return which sits on the cooler mount to provide plumbing for a remote cooler - he has modified the tinware to allow for the extra height needed when the normal cooler is re-fitted on top. I don't know if he has tried it for more than a leakage test though.
I'll be seeing him sometime in August, and find out the details. I've some photos of his installation.
There's a bracket for a spin-on filter which is shown in one of the project forums on here. I'll look it up and edit this post. I promised him some photos of an oil filter arrangement, but haven't got round to it yet, so I'll send them to you too. Who knows, I might get them onto the site for others! It's made more complicated as when I go into ftp I have to negotiate extra security requirements that just make it tedious. Maybe I will set up a web photo account somewhere.

As Peter says, the gauze and the frequent oil changes required for these cars make it pretty pointless. If you wanted to run expensive synthetic oil there might be some point, but that's not advisable, according to those who have tried. Anyway, maintenance is part of the quality time we spend on our cars, isn't it?
;-) :-)

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=10589#p54010 is where Mick posted the filter head bracket photo.
Dave.

Thanks guys for all your help, looks like some of the installs in the photos you emailed me Dave are pretty full on, was hoping to be able to fit more of "bolt on" set up - oh well perhaps I'll just stick with what VW intended!

Purple man is correct, I did a full flow mod. I ended up tapping the block and using banjo fittings to squeeze in behind the fan housing. Though I did have to clearance it slightly

Just re-visiting this as i am planning on a bit of a road trip around Europe next year and thought the extra oil capacity and better filtration would help with reliability/cooling.
I found these oil pump covers are they low enough profile to go in behind the fan cowling without a mod do you think Broady?
Also did you change your oil pump to a higher capacity one or one with blocked internal galleries or would you even need it with this kind of set up?

I fitted a plugged shadek 26mm oil pump, a gene berg pump cover with outlet and a CSP oil gallery inlet fitting - plumbing takes some patience and some light clearancing on the engine hanger to clear the fittings but it is all plumbed up nicely via a filter with thermostat and then into a large oil cooler with fan under the car.
Fitted to a modest 1955cc motor so should stay really cool but more importantly there is a lot more oil circulating around the motor - filtered too!
Fitted low profile 1.5lt sump also to avoid any risk of starving the pump.
No need for a bigger oil pump - the shadek pumps are very good - I use one in a 2.3 race motor and no problems.
If you need any photos of case mods and fittings let me know

Hi Jmarkha1, thanks for your reply, yes some pictures would be very helpful and is that oil pump readily available at most of the usual air cooled vw stockists or is it a specialist item?

Thanks Doug.

Yes - the pump is available at most aftermarket vw shops online - some even sell them with the tapped and plugged outlet which avoids you having to drill, tap and plug the case.

a few pictures - hopefully this will give you an idea of whats involved - most of it was pretty straightforward - just needs a bit of patience when clearanceing the engine hanger. Last picture shows the oil cooler blanking plug and mods I did to the tinware to stop the cooling air escape -
