Another Wheel offset quastion

Post by Knoxxy » 26th June 2016 - 1:04pm

Hi All, hello, my first post since getting my Type 3!
Firstly apologies, I know there's a to on here on wheel types/sizes, I have been through a lot of threads, but wanted to ask a question.

I have just acquired a lovely 1972 Squareback.
She's currently on 5.5/15" 914 replicas, which I don't love.

I'm thinking of going back to steels/beauty rings/white walls.
My question is around offset on the steelies.

The 914 have an offset of 35mm.
It seems like the JustKampers 5.5/15" steelies have an offset of 27mm.

Is this going to be OK?
Will the stance be noticeably different?
As I love the way it sits now.

Any other suggestions always appreciated.

I'm not sure if the Type 3 use the same ET41 offset s the type 4 or not.

I'm sure stock type 3 wheels are a 46 mm offset.

You might be best off putting a wanted add up, as most peeps decide to run aftermarket wheels on there rides, so there must be plenty of stock wheels hiding in peeps garages.

Stock Type 3 4-bolt and all Type 4 are the same wheel, at least as far as 1972; 4.5Jx15, part number 311 601 025C. ET46 is correct for this stock wheel, and measures how far the tyre centreline is from the disc hub surface where the wheel mounts.
I found a previous post showing I have a pair of '73 rims with 41mm offset, which I assumed were off a Type 3 - maybe they're not! I'll have to check to see if they're actually wider rims than stock when the rain stops! They look pretty standard, and the 165 tyres fit OK.

I have a pair of 4j rims. Need a sandblast and powder coat.

I expect 4J will be Beetle rims.

Coming back to your original question, and having realised we are talking about 5.5 inch rims.

The JK wheels will be 8mm closer to the centre line of the car if you fit them without spacers. Getting a set of 6mm spacers should be fairly easy, but before you do make sure that the wheel bolts have sufficient thread length to go through the wheel and spacer to tighten properly.

I've been doing some reading around and it looks like ET46 is correct for stock, including the type 4. Doing the maths, you have 25mm additional wheel width to standard, halve that and you have ~12mm, so to have the outside of the wheel in the same position you reduce the offset from 46mm to 34mm.

ET41 was an option for the type 3 (M976?) which might also be KG. Looks like my 412LS didn't have an original wheel on it
