Rusty floorpan edges
Rusty floorpan edges
Hi everyone,
I started with the restoration of a 1970 Notchback.
The floor pans are in good condition and I cleaned them up.
There were some small holes which I patched up nicely with a mig welder and I also removed the jack supports and placed a new panel because of rust under them.
The problem now are the edges of the pans. On the left hand side the are okay except the front corner. On the right hand side they are everywhere crusty.
It is only the 8mm horizontal edge, not the large vertical edge that is crusty.
Overal state of the right hand side:
Crusty part on the right hand side:
On beetles everyone just replaces rusted pans, therefore I could not find any info on how to repair this.
What is the best solution to repair these edges?
I know there are new panel edges but the cost €165 per side (werk34 has them), which makes it very expensive for the 8 mm edge.
I could try to weld on a new strip of 8mm, this would be doable but will take a along time.
Is it okay to just grind off these edges? This edge folds over the bottom joint of the rocker panel. Water would be able to get between these edges and in my idea, the water would be trapped in there always. Grinding off these edges would not make a difference structural and water would not be trapped anymore.
I picture that shows what I mean:
Does anyone has any advice on this problem?

Re: Rusty floorpan edges
Don't think you have to buy the Floorpan Edges in full Sets.
They were available individually for £30 odd each section.
Just searched on eBay. It turned up L/H Rear Type 3 Floorpan Edge Repair Section at £49.40 Delivered from VW Heritage ! It's on VW Heritage website as 311 701 081
Have to agree it sounds a lot for the small bit you need !
Have you tried T3D / Paul Medhurst ? That was where I got mine, plus Outer Sills, and Heater Channel Repair Panels with the Nuts for the Body Mounting Bolts welded in place.
typ3konny does those. Have you tried type3konny eBay shop ?
Status VW sold them before they were taken over, so maybe still have them ?

Re: Rusty floorpan edges
I bought some short edge pieces from T3D but that was a while ago. Tbh you could probably make them easy enough as it's just a flat section and it'd save you quite a bit of money too
Re: Rusty floorpan edges
Thanks for the advice s.unsworth and brimfull. I'm going to try fabricate a new edge myself and weld it on!
I already orderd parts from typ3konny, they are very helpfull and fast!
Does T3D also have a lot of parts on stock?

Re: Rusty floorpan edges
T3D used to have lots in stock but I've not ordered from them in a while so I wouldn't know, sorry. I think he used to source a lot of stuff from Europe himself so you should have no worries getting bits. typ3koony seems to have lots of parts and I may have to go shopping there myselfSjazze wrote:Thanks for the advice s.unsworth and brimfull. Re: Rusty floorpan edges
I had some welding lessons and tricks from a friend and got started on the pan edges:
I replaced the front corner of the right hand side:
and also rear corner:
On the left hand side a welded on new edges on the whole side
A small part at the jack holder still needs to be done and the edges need to be grinded to the correct width.
For these two parts I am waiting on new heaterchannels of CSP, wich will arrive tomorrow!
Thanks for the encouragement to not just grind of the edges .
