Late Air Filter Question
Late Air Filter Question
My 1971 oil bath air filter has a inlet underneath, just after the connection to the the main intake boot, by the flap mechanism. As long as I have had the car this has just been open to the engine bay, should it be connected with a hose to something? I'll try to get a picture in the morning to illustrate. From various searches I believe it is a warm air intake for cold climates?
Re: Late Air Filter Question
My wife beetle has a connection on its oil bath filer there as well, about 1/2 inch diameter that connects to the oil filler bit. Would Type 3s have a similar set up?

Re: Late Air Filter Question
I still need to take a pic... from research it seems it's a feature on '71 carb cars, but beyond that I've not found much more apart from hints it may hook up to the head or even a heat exchanger. Obviously I'd like it to be as it should be, rather than open. If it means I should block it for now and fix flaps one way (I believe earlier filters had a fixed winter and summer setting), so be if.
Re: Late Air Filter Question
This is further complicated by mine originally being FI, which apparently didn't have it...(my car has both fuel lines in tunnel for the return, and compartment for the brain, so think it was FI originally).
Re: Late Air Filter Question
My 411 is FI and there are crankcase breather pipes and one from the airfilter going to a flame trap on top of the engine by the PCV valve. Sorry if it's not helping at all but I've no experience of type 3 FI but assume they also ran the D Jetronic system which I assume would have similar plumbing

Re: Late Air Filter Question
It's ok it's my fault I should get pics to explain better my car was originally FI but has been converted to carbs before my ownership. I'll take pics tomorrow and post up.

Re: Late Air Filter Question
That's the Hot air intake- it draws warm air from next to the Exhaust to aid warm up in colder weather

I take it You know that the little pipe on top goes to the breather tower

Re: Late Air Filter Question
Thanks Peter, just wanted to check it shouldn't be connected to something. Yep, breather is connected normally on mine so all good on that frontpurplepeter wrote:That's the Hot air intake- it draws warm air from next to the Exhaust to aid warm up in colder weather

Will, PM Me Your Postal address please or send via Facebook
I've spent today sorting through & listing a stash of Type 3 parts on behalf of a former Type 3 Owner who is about to emigrate
There were 2 of those warm air pipes, so You're getting a nice one with the tinware piece it connects to
It's a gift from "Tallmatt" or Matt Singleton on FB
