Post by FASTY72 » 6th April 2017 - 4:33pm

Hi
My72 Fastback has just failed its MOT it says on the fail form...

Stub axle has excessive vertical movement between stub axle and axle beam Nearside front upper. It is the part I have arrowed.

Anyone know what this is and what parts I would need to fix ? I think it is were the Thrust ring and needle bearing are. Any suppliers I can get the parts from ?

You say vertical movement... which isn't really what the adjustment will address - its there for lateral (side to side) play, as are the thrust washers.

If its the case that the play is as described then it's more often worn trailing arm bearing surfaces, due to a lack of lubrication.
The bearing needles are harder than the arm, so will wear divets in the trailing arm bearing surface because of the very little angular movement in the suspension system.
Only in extreme instances if a needle roller has collapsed or the bearing is rusted due to water ingress will it require replacement.

You will need to remove the trailing arm to inspect it. If it has worn then it requires replacing, but be careful you don't end up buying someone else's worn pair!
