Noise From Engine Bay
Noise From Engine Bay
I've had my type 3 now for 6 months and never had any issues until this past week or so. A raspy sort of noise can be heard from the back end and at first I suspected it was the exhaust but I can't see any holes or tears in the welded seams. There are no leaks either and I've checked for loose bolts and fittings but again haven't found anything. The car runs absolutely fine too. There is a small chunk or rubber missing from the air intake bellow but I think this has always been there. Any ideas?
Re: Noise From Engine Bay
Block the tail pipe with the palm of your hand to listen for Exhaust leaks.
They sometimes leak from the rear heat exchanger to exhaust box joint which may not be obvious.
The hole in your bellows should not be ignored as it will suck hot air into the cooling system off the exhaust - it certainly hasn't always been like that!
Also, not exactly raspy, but the dynamo bearings rumble a bit when they are on their way out.

Re: Noise From Engine Bay
Hopefully it's just a loose baffle in the silencer, but you may have a loose bolt that is fouling the fan. It makes an unpleasant metallic rattling or grating sound, and sometimes can be intermittent. I've only heard it once when Danny had the problem. If the engine has been apart for overhaul, it's very important to make sure the bolts than hold the big aluminium fan housing to the back of the crankcase are secure. Sometimes loctite is used, which is a good idea. Some people reckon on tapping slightly deeper holes and using longer screws, but watch out you don't pierce right through or you'll get oil leaks. It needs some dismantling of tinware if that's the problem, but it's not a quick and easy job.
Dave.

I do agree with Editor's comment. My cousin has a similar problem and it turned out it was the fan.

Re: Noise From Engine Bay
By the way, just a question. Anyone knows where to get an aftermarket exhaust/pipe for our vw?

Go for a wanted add, in the wanted section. this threads fairly dead now. They pop up on ebay every now and then. And I'm sure either VWHeritage or similar do a new one
