Is auto engine different?

Post by mintybug » 29th August 2017 - 3:10am

Hi,

Read somewhere that the engine fitted to automatic transmission Type 3's has a different case to that of a manual car, is that true? If so what is the difference & can a std/normal/manual engine be adapted to fit?

Cheers

The auto case has a different casting at lower flex plate end to allow spanner access to the flex plate bolts. Standard case 'could' be modified - carefully - particularly if its magnesium -

I fitted a Beetle engine to an auto box. To do it you have to drill an inch hole in the engine casing. Put gearbox next to engine and mark a hole through the flex plate onto the casing. The auto box has a cut out at the bottom and the beetle engine doesnt so this trick is the easiest way to do it. Mine has been fine for 10 years. If you need a picture showing where the hole is I will happily take one.. Gra.
