1971 Squareback lights and clocks

Post by Jared1969 » 10th September 2017 - 9:23am

Hi all

After years of searching I finally have my dream car a Cali import 71 Squareback. I am in the process of getting it ready for driving in the UK and obviously an MOT.

I need some assistance regarding the front and rear lights. Can I keep the USA rears or do I need to have UK versions with white reverse bits. Also will 71 beetle or bay window lights fit the fronts?

Finally what is the best replacement clocks to MPH again could I use the same year UK bay or beetle clocks. I do have an old bay window I can rob some bits from and also have plenty of spares from my 1302 beetle.

Thanks for your help and looking forward to meeting some new friends.

Jared

Hi Jared,

Uk bay and beetle lights should fit. If you have the two extra taps within your wing headlight bowls found on the later type 3 wings your open to the world of mk1 golf headlights or any 7" round headlight with a US type headlamp retainer.

I've got US red lenses with an Amber coloured CREE LED indicator bulb and passes an MOT.

It came up in conversation before, please have the video :)

Plenty of people on the forum have type 3 specific speedometers for sale ( myself included ) I have a restored grey coloured set available (speedometer, aux gauges & clock) £50.

Hi thanks really appreciate it.

Any chance of some pics of the clocks. I have a really solid car and running so hoping not to have to do too much to have it running on the road.

So any help on here is much appreciated.

Thanks again

Well... used to have a for sale thread but it's disappeared. Photobucket is useless.

Will go out into the garage shortly and get fresh pictures of the gauges for you.

yes, the rear lights are a grey area. just use them but make sure the flash is orange, ie use an orange bulb and you'll be reet.

You can use any clocks you like, but obviously modifications would have to be made. Surely you only need to change the speedo? The others should work anywhere in the world. do you have a photo of what you have fitted as there were a couple of different colours/designs. So I assume you will want a speedo to match the clock and fuel gauge instruments?

The Cal import should be MPH and miles anyway. The Aussie ones may be KPH.

I've UK spec rear lenses if your MoT tester won't allow amber bulbs behind red plastic.

I've also got a couple of trip speedos in MPH, assuming I can locate them.
