Lower trailing arm parts
Lower trailing arm parts
Am I right in thinking lower arm needle bearings and bushes are same as Type 1? What parts will I need if I'm replacing, inner, outer, grease seals? Thanks in advance
Re: Lower trailing arm parts

Re: Lower trailing arm parts
Thanks Broady, interesting reading. My upper trailing arms seem reasonably in spec after adjustment, but when on the shake plates yesterday I noticed both lower arms had movement, so will be looking to source bearings/bushes and seals to renew. I seem to remember lowers being the same as lower Beetle parts, if so I'll just get some ordered up.
Re: Lower trailing arm parts
I see VW heritage stock:
Needle bearing with a Type 3 part # (good start): https://www.vwheritage.com/311401301c-n ... lower-8-65
Late bug seal (hopefully will fit?): https://www.vwheritage.com/131405129-to ... ower-large
And bushing (again, late Bug: https://www.vwheritage.com/131401313-bu ... m-i-s-diam
Reckon those will do me?

Please can You keep us updated on this Will?... I've been trying to get some bushes out & failed so far
Re: Lower trailing arm parts
I will do Peter. The parts should be here this week but it may be next month before the car goes in for the work due to other commitments. I am guessing some form of puller is required? The gent doing the work for me does a lot of work on old VW's, so will get his thoughts tomorrow, as I am taking my T25 into him for some work. I'll be interested to see the state of my trailing arms, would be lovely to get away with re-using them, but have a feeling I'll be sourcing some others due to years of metal-on-metal action.purplepeter wrote: ↑3rd October 2017 - 8:41amPlease can You keep us updated on this Will?... Re: Lower trailing arm parts
The seal is a Type 1 part you ordered, but the inner bush is Type 3 - 311 401 335A.
The tool I've seen for the job is a slide hammer with a long enough shaft and a thick oval washer with the centre slotted along the major axis.
The idea is the washer passes through the bush by tilting it then as its pulled back it locates on the edge of the bush.
As you've seen the bush is not very thick so the washer would need to be quite accurate.
I have the installation tools if you want to borrow / copy them.

Re: Lower trailing arm parts
I made the upper and lower removal tool. once its in i just used a bit of plate and socket to pull it out.
Nice and easy. The tricky part is getting them in with out damage

Received my goodies from T3HQ today:
Re: Lower trailing arm parts
I'm afraid I might be a little slow if I'm honest Broady, my day to day car has just cost me best part of £300 for engine mounts and the camper nearly that again getting the servicing up to date :/ before these parts go in, I'm probably going to treat the fasty to some new lower arms too, I imagine mine will be worse for wear when they finally see daylight.
