2.0ltr on twin 44's

Post by Lee Scott » 24th April 2018 - 3:17pm

Hi guys my square is running a 2007 with twin 44's. The neck on the carbs mean that they jut out the top of the engine bay so the previous owner did what he could and made a riser to house everything. However I have a bloody awful bump in my load area. Short of sticking twin solex on and chocking the beast what are my options. Zero or is there a glimmer of hope?

it is possible to lower the engine slightly as its an IRS, but you have to be careful not to stress the gearbox nose cone mount. The engine mount holes could be slotted if you just need a couple of mm or more drastic measures such as cutting and lengthening the mounts if its needed.

Pretty severe options. I wondered about smaller filters but I've been told that they need room to gas off. Lower filters might result in fuel collection and I could get a fire on lift off from unburnt fuel. It totally negates the square as I no longer have a flat load area. Back to the drawing board.

This is on a Type 4, but Stef at MAC VW in Manchester recently did this which I thought was a really cool solution (this engine is now in a Notch):

Could always give Stef a call, he's a genius with this stuff.

Probably wouldnt get away with that on a type 3 because of the oil cooler hump though :(

Unfortunately they easy answer you were after doesnt really exist. you just have to adapt and improvise to find a solution that fits your requirements. Thats why I love old cars, they give you the freedom to experiment :D

You can get short IDF manifolds, I've got a set on my engine.
But I have had to trim the engine hatch opening to get the CB Performance filters to fit. You might get a set of Ramflo filters on without having to cut any body work though.

But of course I never even thought to ask if he had short manifolds. O just assumed. I've got a set too. Pretty handy things 😁

I believe the manifolds are as standard. Good shout. I will look into this further.

They wont be standard as standard ones are for single throat carburettors. But id guess you have got beetle manifolds. They can be modified to suit a type 3 by a skilled welder. Otherwise keep an eye out for a type 3 set. they are more or less the same but shorter. Id take a photo of mine but theyre not in my garage at the minute!

type 3 short manifolds and ramflos will fit under the deck and work well - plenty of clearance on mine.

I mean manifolds are as standard for the carb set up. A 2ltr type 3 isn't normal. I'll investigate these options further. What I don't want to do is choke the lump.

You won’t, I’m building a 2 litre stroker engine for mine using the same manifolds.

As that man says, shorter manifolds won't restrict flow. Only a smaller diameter will do that.

I'm on a massively steep learning curve with this. ;) Enjoying it but this is way way WAY out of my comfort zone. ha

Car is already on short manifolds apparently. So we're back to the drawing board on this one. Ha!

worth trying ramflo filters - they are very low profile but provide lots of air compared to a pancake style.
If that doesn't work you could space the engine mounts from the subframe by a few mm to help

Everything's more expensive now, and probably less well made.
Another £100 bites the dust.....
