In car heating.

Post by Jamesq123 » 29th April 2018 - 10:30am

I've not long purchased my first air cooled....it's a '72 fastback. My question is about setting the heating in the car. I have a switch for what looks like the windscreen and 2 knobs which I can turn left or right and the levers either side of the handbrake. And 2 plastic flaps on the dash. Am i right in thinking that if I have the levers fully up (or back) and the flaps open and the knobs fully turned left (lefty lucy) I should get hot air through the flaps to hear the cabin? The car is a 1600TL and RH drive although don't think that makes a difference!

Hello, welcome to the forum. You are incorrect squire. The knobs on the dash are left and right hand fresh air (cold) vents. So these need to be closed. along with the dash flaps.

But the two levers near the handbrake do need to be up, left will open the flaps under the rear seat and right opens the heat exchnagers.

To get warm air to the screen you need the left hand lever down and the right hand up. Then assuming all your pipes are connected and none are holed and the tube in the sills and A pillar isnt rotten you will get a gentle waft of warm air to the windscreen to help prevent fogging

I couldn't say on the fresh air controls- Don't think I've touched them in living memory!
But I would add that if You have a stock Exhaust system, the Type 3 has quite aggressive heating- You'll have noticed that Type 3 owners always drive around with the windows open, partly just because the car is so cool, but also to get rid of the heat!

Clockwise is closed and anti clockwise is open. But the easy way it turn the knob and when air stops blowing through. its closed :D

Here's a link to a 1972 owner's manual. Download it and have a read though.

Why was it supplied? I can only assume because one of the old ones is damaged. I that case you don't want to be turning the heating on. A damaged heat exchanger will more than likely be pumping exhaust fumes into the car

It's not very common for Type 3 heat exchangers to leak exhaust fumes, though sometimes there's fumes drawn in around rusty casings. Sniff the outlets and if you smell exhaust, don't use the heater until you get it mended.

The slider knobs on the A posts send hot air to the footwells or the screen. Down gives heat to the screen, and up sends it to your feet (counter intuitive!).

Thanks guys for the help....I've since had the car on a ramp and we noticed the heating ducts/tubes that go from the exhaust and attach to the body are missing...so need new ducts and the wires that open the flaps..

the cable is a couple of quid from any of the usual suppliers. And the two tubes you need are just bits of exhaust flexi with some insulation wrapped round them.

Something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/35mm-1-3-8-I ... xyqUpQ8B0e

I cant remember the right diameter at the minute, but I will measure mine tonight. Unless you measured yours? You will also need 4 clips/clamps to hold it on.
