Vaccum pipes

Post by mawsy » 23rd May 2018 - 10:42am

Hi there, I have a72 square that is just about ready for the road, I cannot find how to install the carb vaccum pipes. The left hand carb has 1 pipe below the carb, the right has 2 pipes below the carb. I have fitted a vaccum advance dizzy as the acuspark dizzy was no use. Also the left carb is not running correctly, thanks in advance for any help cheers Mawsy

Are you auto or manual? The manual will only have 1 vacuum pipe. It runs from the left hand carb to the vacuum unit on the distributor.

Could you be referring to the balance pipe which connects to the manifolds?

On the carb manifolds I have 1 pipe on the left carb, and 2 on the right hand manifold, I have plugged these off with tape

Ok they are the balance pipes not vacuum pipes. Either as my purples has posted. you have one manifold with the 2-1 adapter fitted and one with out. Or you have two different manifolds

It sounds like you have two different manifolds. I do have spares if you need one to match.

Post by mawsy » 2nd June 2018 - 7:05pm

Hi all, I have a72 square almost ready for the road. Problem is on the carb manifolds there are balance pipes, 2 on the driving side carb, 1 on the left hand carb of a smaller diameter. The carbs are solex pict 3, 32/34. How are these connected. I have a drawing of the balance pipe crossing the engine but no details of connections help please cheers Mawsy

As i think we established in your last thread, you've got a pair of mismatched manifold sir.

In your previous thread you said one manifold had two ports and the other had 1 port. They should either both have two ports, or both have 1 port.

As couple of us mention here viewtopic.php?f=26&t=13884

Ive moved this to the workshop and merged it with the original thread for you. Hopefully more people will see it here

Which do you suggest using, the manifold with single pipe or the one with 2 connections, I think the single for ease of connecting balance pipes cheers Mawsy

Im sure ill be correct if im wrong, but the single connection manifolds were for carburetor engines and the two port manifolds were for fuel injected.

So on this link https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/typ+ ... 129-18000/

items 2 and 4 are fuel injected and 1 and 3 are carburetor.

A little aside, ive have been running items 1 and 3 with carbs for nearly 10 years and they dont cause any issues. I think all that matters if you have a matching pair and seal all the ports.

Hope this helps

ah that's a shame, get an advert and some photos posted in the for sale section. I'm sure it will sell. And it will be nice to see the car

You don't use an email address. You will need to join a website like flickr or imageshack. You upload the photos there, you then need the direct or img link. Then on here at the top of the reply box is a button with a little picture. Click that and you will get img in some brackets. Paste you link between the two imgs and your done. There are a number of guides on this forum too if you're stuck
