Front inner wing

Post by Rob 400e » 10th June 2018 - 6:48pm

I've taken the front wings off my 411le. On the top of the inner wing is a box sexton with three 2.5 cm holes on the n/s and three on the o/s on having what I assume is a petrol return pipe.when I removed the wings these holes were covered with clear plastic fastened in place with what looked like weld seal!!! Is this factory? I've put grommets in have I done the right thing?

Cheers David, I can bash on now and re fit the wings this week. Still lots to do, hopefully will be roadworthy for the Tatton park VW show.

I suspect the holes were for ventilation to help dry out what are more or less salt boxes once winter weather plays its tricks. Type 3s from 1972 got these. Maybe the same for Type 4s. Probably the previous owner decided to cover them before they allowed salt water to get in.
Dave.
