Post by Jamesq123 » 24th June 2018 - 6:55pm

So.. I've just washed the fastback... Took it for a drive as u do..and turned a corner and water was pouring out of the black box under the dash board! Any ideas how to sort this?

Fresh air box seals, available from Simon Kelley, notch1500 on eBay.
Bugger of a job to do though.

If the black box was full of water then the drain is blocked. Underneath it you will see a short rubber hose that goes to the bulk head. That hose needs unblocking, from the underside of the car you might be able to broggle the hole but I suspect it would be easier with the fuel tank out. Alternatively take the black box out and give it all a good clean, its probably full of leaves and dirt.

What's the best way to get the black box out?

There is only 1 way, Remove the pipe work, it just pulls off, pull away from the drain, then in each corner at the top is a 10mm set screw. Remove those and slowly lower the box, you will see two cables connected to connected to the top which control the flaps. Photograph that and then disconnect.

While you have got it out, clear out the scuttle from inside the car as it will be full of rubbish too then apply some rust proofing, and its a common fault on these cars, it will rust through an allow water to leak into the car and rot your floor out.

Having done a repair job on this, I would recommend whilst it's off, get some dinitrol 3125 in aerosol, with the extended 360degree spray end. Where the top of the black air box seals to the bulk head, feed the hose in and get a load of dinitrol in there to protect it...fixing a rotted out airbox is no fun whatsoever.
