Ignition problem

Post by Rob 400e » 26th June 2018 - 8:29pm

I have electronic fuel injection on my 411 le, I managed to leave the ignition switched on for eight hours !!! Oh dear. I tried to start the car which normally starts first time on the button, it just turned over. I touched the coil which was at melting point so I assume I've fried the coil. Would I have damaged the whole electronic system?

It's more than likely you have nailed it. The coil has over heated, does the fuel pump still run?

It doubt it will have been on for 8 hours, the battery probably went flat before then. I'd agree coil will be burnt out, I wouldn't expect there would be other damage. Fingers crossed.

Will check to see if I have fuel pumping tomorrow and check for a spark. I can live with changing the coil and fuel pump fingers crossed I haven't trashed anything else. And yes the ignition was on for eight hours and it still turned over no prob.

Well that is a surprise............ I suppose now I'll have to admit doing the same thing, flat battery but coil still absolutely fine. Figure that out, I can't.

Hmm, now that's an interesting question, the answer to which is of course that I don't know.

Points open = no circuit for LT side, so no EM field in HT circuit and no coil damage ?

My running one is an LS so no fuel pump relay etc to worry about

Better to be lucky than good :)
