Badge Clips

Post by s.unsworth » 8th December 2018 - 12:00pm

Not strictly Type 3 or 4 but still VW. I have bought Bonnet Badge Nylon Inserts from 2 different VW sources under the Part Number everyone says is correct 113 853 615 They do not fit the holes in the Bonnet of our 1966 Beetle. The Nylon Inserts are 4.8mm od. The holes are less than 4mm 3.8mm is my best guess. Was there a smaller used on older VWs anyone please ?

Ta,

Steve

113 853 615 is for type 3 all years, so its a beetle part.

I assume this is what you are referring to?

That’s them. But they will not fit our 1966 Beetle. Even tried leaving them in hot water to soften them up. The ones it needs would have to be 3.8 - 4 mm external 3.0 - 3.2 mm internal. The Pins on the VW Badge are exactly 3.2mm. Did all the measuring with a thing for measuring Drill sizes.

Yes. Body Off Resto September - October. I had considered that it might just be the thickness of the new Paint. Then I thought, no, couldn’t be. Maybe I’m wrong ? But I will not be doing anything to damage the new Paint. It will have to be the Clips that get modified first !

Only other suggestion is that I need N0120801 Metal Clips ? Maybe ?

Got a set of the N0120801 Metal Clips that fit the Split Screen Van Front Badge. The holes in the middle are just too big to grip a Beetle Bonnet Badge, so back to square one !

Sounds like mr purple is right, you need to file away some of the paint which has built up in the holes during the respray

I’d rather file the Nylon Inserts than my new paint !

Or just find some smaller ones.

It looks like Simon Kelley sells the inserts, so it's worth asking if His are genuine? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Badge-cli ... :rk:2:pf:0

Beyond that. I take it You've tried hitting them in with a hammer?
Or maybe find some used/second hand ones?

I had the same problem. Turned out the issue was filler, primer and paint thickness in the holes. I carefully reamed out the holes with a drill bit and painted the inside of the holes to prevent any rust. The nylon plugs push in and the badge goes right in with a firm push.

Thank you for the suggestions but as the ‘66 Beetle has just had a very expensive “ Body Off” and new Paint Job by IRVs VW Restorations, I will not be doing anything to the Paint.

I have found 2 different Vintage / Classic Car Parts On Line suppliers who list the correct type of Plastic Inserts in many different sizes. I’ll be going that route. 1/8” ( 3.175mm ) Badge Pin Size to fit 11/64” ( 4.366mm ) Panel Holes should be perfect.
