Type 3 IRS gearbox alignement

Post by broady_6 » 21st December 2018 - 12:13pm

So who knows what? Ive got the manual and it details how to do this, but with out the alignment bar im stuck. Does anyone have the measurements to get the gearbox running down the centre line of the car? Id like to make my own bar, is it really as simple as the width divided by two, or is there an offset?

ive search here the samba and google with no joy :(

This might be a daft idea, especially as I don't have a type 3... but, using my general rear engine experience

If the engine was in position then the location for the gearbox is fixed by the bell housing bolts / input shafts. You then just have to make sure the box runs down the axial line correctly and is not skewed away somehow ?

AS its fixed both ends of the gearbox, how could you affect adjustment anyway?

Is there any adjustment at the mounting rubber end?

Looks like you have to correctly set the toe on each of the rear wheels,

Then check the gearbox centre is midway beteen the cv joint flanges, page 76

Any adjustment is then done by slight movement of the engine mounts.

Yeah, as i say i completely understood how to adjust it. It was "what am i adjusting it too?" As peter says its just half the distance between the two drive shaft flanges
