IRS gearbox tool
Hi everyone, bit of a long shot but does anyone have a pinion nut socket that they would be willing to lend me?
Thanks Doug.
Thanks Doug.

Re: IRS gearbox tool
On the same subject I have dismantled the rest of the gearbox in an attempt to fix the “crunching” when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd however there are no visble signs of wear or broken parts! Any ideas?
Re: IRS gearbox tool
ive never been brave enough to go inside one of these boxes. could you do a us a thread so we can all see what your up to? it might also help find your problems, what seems right to one person may look wrong to another.

Check the Detents Doug! I think you have to drill out the plugs

Re: IRS gearbox tool
Gearboxes are pretty reliable so my suggestion would be to look for a secondhand one, although fixing it would be satisfying (and informative for the rest of us).

Re: IRS gearbox tool
Peter I’m guess you’re referring to the shift rod plungers as they appear to be behind some aluminium pressed in plugs and as far as I can see all they are responsible for is retaining a selected gear in position and yes Dave as the only issue with my gearbox is its “crunching” when shifting from 3rd to 2nd I’m keen to repair it over buying an unknown quantity second hand unit!
Re: IRS gearbox tool
I think crunching when changing down is most likely due to worn synchromesh cones. It can help to 'double de-clutch' with a bit of throttle while the pedal is up and the gear is in neutral. It can also be beneficial when synchro is worn to do the same when changing up, but without the throttle blip. It's sometimes called a racing change. You may be better to live with it and learn this gear changing technique.
Dave.
