Headlight Bowls
Asking for a friend!
Koen, (Starsky from Belgium) is building a race car & wants to know if Type 3 Headlight bowls (ie the metal bowl in the wing) are the same as Type 1?
I've tried the argument that race car= non working headlight & therefore doesn't matter, but He wants it to be right!
Can anyone advise please?

Re: Headlight Bowls
I know the early cars have the same Hella headlights as type 1s and type2s, not sure about later cars though.
EDIT: Just checked the part number 311 941 039 F fits type 1 MY 1968-1973, type 2 MY 1968-1972 and type 3 all years.

Re: Headlight Bowls
I would hazard a guess that they arent, simply because the beetle has a sloping wing, so it would be more a crescent moon sort of shape in profile where as the type 3 is more of a half moon. If you understand what I mean? And if ive rightly understood that were talking about the part of the wing, rather than any of the head light assembly its self?

Yes!
I initially said No, they weren't the same, but couldn't offer any recollection of where I got that from

1967-73 Type 1 are upright headlights, same as Type 3.broady_6 wrote: ↑28th January 2019 - 6:45pmI would hazard a guess that they arent, simply because the beetle has a sloping wing, so it would be more a crescent moon sort of shape in profile where as the type 3 is more of a half moon. Earlier Type 1s have the sloping wings.
Re: Headlight Bowls
Sorry my bad use of terminology there! I was referring to late beetle types but using early terms.
But you did raise a great point now that ive reread your post. Bay windows bowls will do the trick!

Re: Headlight Bowls
The chrome headlamp surrounds for 1968-on Beetles are the same as Type 3 ones (311 941 111A) so the rims of the headlamp bowls must be the same. Chance are then that the bowls are the same.

Re: Headlight Bowls
When a pickup reversed in to the front of my 1972 Type 3 the damaged Front Wing was repaired using a Beetle Headlamp Bowl.
