Well my head is still screaming tappets. Some alternate options. Type4s are hydraulic tappets? Youve got a stuck lifter which is machining away inside the head. A valve guide has come loose and its belting up and down with the valve. Somethings in that valve train is goosed.

Not a positive post I know, but thats how it sounds

Type 4's have solid tappets, they went to hydraulic when the T25 was introduced

I'm not convinced that it was at camshaft speed rather than crankshaft when I listened with the normal tickover, I have changed my mind a few times though, and I can't count fast enough to determine.

When you listen to the left hand head that seemed to be quite quiet. There wasn't a recording for 1/2 which I could form a view on, and perhaps more importantly, or worryingly, the sound did seem to be central, that's why I was hoping for another recording from a metre away.

Centre of the crankcase, top part is the crank.....

Probably....... but the frequency didn't seem an awful lot different to what I heard from this, which is what got me thinking and doubting.

In case you want to know it's from a Saab, number 2 shell partially spun. Unbelievably I think the crank is still within spec. Modern tech, snapped con-rods/caps  , I understand the approach, but it just does not seem to be proper engineering

If it persists and my car is finish at some point before the heat death of the universe, it seems like an excuse for a day out in 2 or 3 months time.

Hi folks, I've been busy last week searching for a reliable engine builder. Good news found one!! He is 250 mile away but eh! Paul Miller of Harry Harpics, IRS fame. I am looking between 6/8 weeks.
I've been let down by two engine builders over the last five months you know the scenario keep you on the line for a couple of months then suddenly they have so much work on they can't possibly do it. Me thinks they just can't do it!!!!
Anyway until it departs on the back of a truck all I can do is keep my fingers crossed. Will keep you posted.

Well you only had to ask.... ;)

Paul Weeding, LVH engines,http://lvhengines.co.uk/

He's an aircooled & type 4 specialist, based in Newcastle so not 250 miles away either.

I haven't used him but he gave some good advice on a T25 engine I was working on

Thank you for your input, however I'm not a messer, unless the builder pulls out its a goer.

Stolen from your other thread to close this one off nicely.
"Well the 411 went off to Harry Harpics and the strip down began. I received an email with accompanying photos and a metallic object was sitting on top of the piston!!! On very close inspection of one photo it looks to me like a Jubilee clip, well the remains of one. The good news is there is little damage to the head of the piston and no damage to the cylinder head. Next head scratcher how has that got in there?"

I've heard of bits of carb, specifically the Type 3 accelerator jet, being injested and spat out of the exhaust, but I suspect someone dropped the jubilee clip in.
The only bearing work I've done was on our white Polo which started making nasty rattling noises when our eldest son was speeding home from Uni.
The RAC brought him home from the Severn Bridge, and it turned out to be no. 1 bearing with oil starvation due to the internal pick-up pipe gauze being clogged. That was at about 80,000 miles, but I polished the crank and straightened out the cap. One new bearing later (which I finally put on no. 4 as it was a bit tight on no. 1, and the car went on through our other 2 sons' Uni days, and we finally scrapped it at over 150,000 miles as most of the interior was coming apart, and brake pipes beginning to show rust.

It's looking very likely one of the washers off the end of the inlet manifold got dropped in. I would like to think I would have noticed a missing washer when reassembling, 4 nuts, 3 washers

Indeed, the evidence is undeniable it wasn't knocking when dropped off at the first garage.
