I woukd just like to say that the 009 works and doesnt come loose even with the clamp untightened.
I was wondering if theres too much play in the inside bit- can that be a thing?

In the shaft? Do you mean you insert the distributor into the engine block and it wont stay engaged with the drive dog in the block?

If thats the case are you sure it is firmly all the way home, it can be quite tricky to get a distributor with a new oring fitted to seat all the way down

Take it out and slide the clamp down it. You may find the clamp doesn't fit all the way down. Which is stopping you getting the distributor seated all the way down

It can, post a photo of what you've got. Defiantly an svda and not an sav? The standard can will stop you from turning it very far, that's normal. But their were bigger diameter cans which could be the issue. A picture paints a thousand words

The distributor drive fits differently from the Beetle. Was care taken to position it correctly for a Type 3 when rebuilding?

Yes, we were so careful to do it right. I did the tappets yesterday and think it is all in the right places. number 1 fires at top left....? tho my haynes manual looks opposite- but we went by the john muir book.
I have now used the proper type 3 clamp and a different sealing ring and the dissy goes right down. Still having a job to statically time it, but at least it runs and the dissy stays put!! thank you all!!
