External oil cooler location

Post by sparkywig » 19th May 2019 - 12:16pm

Hello all.
Any of you running external oil coolers above the gearbox, can you post some pics please?
Thanks.

I don't have one installed. But I mocked one up for the bigger engine I had planned to fit before I saw the body rot. It was along side the gearbox, forward of the drive shaft with a rough tin scoop to duct air into it. The brackets triangulated on the gearbox side plate studs

Not much room there though, how did you mock yours up?

I had quite a small cooler. layed over flat with the elements facing the ground rather than the direction of travel. Havent got access to it at the moment but it was about 8 in x 3 in from memory.

I think I read somewhere that an angle of about 35 degrees works quite well for allowing air to pass through the cooler, without generating too much drag. I think that's the reason for Ginetta G50/55 radiator design.

On the other hand, a couple of coils with aircon type fins will probably prove to be quite adequate

I think I'll go with a smaller cooler rather than the 36 row pictured. Then it can be mounted at an angle under the heat exchanger and ducted.

That cooler is massive!

The one previously had fitted was attached to the rear beam with a bracket and duct. Was 1/4 size of that though.
