Mystery knock solved
Mystery knock solved
Well the 411 went off to Harry Harpics and the strip down began. I received an email with accompanying photos and a metallic object was sitting on top of the piston!!! On very close inspection of one photo it looks to me like a Jubilee clip, well the remains of one. The good news is there is little damage to the head of the piston and no damage to the cylinder head. Next head scratcher how has that got in there?

Re: Mystery knock solved
We really were fighting a touch one there then! With out seeing it and the size of it, the only obvious answer is down the intake some how.

Re: Mystery knock solved
Indeed a tough one, but if I could just post this from the first page of the other thread.
Question is, are you going to ask the first garage to pay for the work done by the second garage

So oil level is fine, and very low mileage, or been round the clock at least once - probably only once, though my 412LS has been round twice
There's nothing from the job list that would give any suspicion, unless something was dropped into the inlet menifold when it was being resealed - pretty unlikely, but not impossible.
I'm with broady, drain and inspect the oil. The type 4 has an additional filtration system I think compared to a type 3, a removable oil strainer. That should have the cover removed and the gauze inspected

Re: Mystery knock solved
I've received another email from Harry Harpics on my theory of a Jubilee clip, he thinks not more likely to be a tin wear 6mm washer.
I will be going to see the first garage owner when I receive the engineers report. I will be pushing for compensation but easier said than done.

Re: Mystery knock solved
Bit of a catch 22 really. If you had taken it back to the original folk they may have realised and tired to cover up the mistake and charged you. But now someone else has worked on it, they will more than likely say, "nowt to do with me gov, someone else has been messing about wiith that"
Or am i just to synical?

Yeah, and with the undoubted benefit of hindsight, use of an endoscope and magnet could well have resulted in a fix without disassembly.

Rebuild not yet finished, I’m hoping it will be finished by the end of June. When it’s sorted I will also have an engineers report so I will go back to the first garage with that and see what they have to say? They can’t deny their at fault but we will see . Will keep all posted.

Re: Mystery knock solved
There is a chance I may, I still don’t know if the transmission is ok. Until the engines sorted it can’t be road tested.

Re: Mystery knock solved
That's news.... what do you think is wrong with the transmission ?
I wouldn't want the engine and box putting back in, only for it to have to be taken out again.
I assume the clutch is being checked / replaced while the box is out as well ?

Re: Mystery knock solved
It’s automatic the original problem was the car would change into top(third) but not accelerate. Hence going to the first garage. Proper nightmare!

Re: Mystery knock solved
If it accelerated in 1st and 2nd, but not 3rd, then I think that's an engine power problem, not transmission.

Re: Mystery knock solved
Yes the first garage thought that plus not enough vacuum hence the inlet manifold being re sealed and the nightmare that followed.

Re: Mystery knock solved
New update... Received an email Wednesday the heads are back from the machine shop, and engine assembly is underway. I’m guessing I will receive another update next week hopefully asking me to collect it!! Fingers crossed. If that is the case and all is well could squeeze in a show possibly.

411 back on the road.
Received the phone call I’ve been waiting for the 411 ready to go. Got the train down to Essex and drove 265 miles back to Burnley. The car never missed a beat in my opinion it’s a testimony to the engine builder Paul Miller ( Harryharpics) he is more than happy to take on the type4 fuel injection. Now looking forward to next years events.

That great news! Shame it was a bit of a long way around. But at least you got it sorted in the end

Good news then, and remember you are halfway to an oil change.
Where do things stand with the garage that you think dropped the washer into the head ?
