Carb help

Post by Curtispwalsh12 » 20th July 2019 - 3:17pm

Hi folks,

I’m after some help please!!

My 67 squareback has been off the road from a couple of years and this week I’ve changed the fuel pump due to leakage, coil, ignition leads etc
I got it running last night but now I’ve noticed under the carbs is a bit wet (fuel) so I’ve been told it’s probably something to do with the throttle body and needing new bushings?
So my question is anyone know where I can get this sorted please before I start looking for new carbs

Many thanks in advance

Curtis

Welcome :)

A photo would help.

Personally, rather than suspecting anything wrong with the carb itself, I think it's more likely to be a leak from the hose that feeds it. You need to get this fixed, as fuel fires in the engine compartment are a big problem for VW's of this era

The carbs can suffer from wear in the bushing for the throttle plate, but that's before fuel is introduced, so that's not the problem.

There are helpful guides at the top of each forum for linking your own photos at whatever resolution you want, or to upload direct there is new facility - follow the announcement near the top of the page, but there are size restrictions.

Thanks for getting back to me David.

I will try and attach a picture later today if I can get my phone on there so you can see where I mean.

Thanks again

Check the connections into the balance pipe & nip up the carb-manifold nuts

Not sure this will work but here is a link to Dropbox where you can see images of the part of the carb highlighted where I can feel the fuel.
(Not my images I couldn’t get my phone underneath to get a pic)

In that case it could be a weepy diapragm- try nipping up the 4 screws

Thank you for the help guys!
Is this something I can do myself or is it slightly more tricky than that?

Its an easy job, take the carb off and its just the 4 screws to the take the pump lever off. Give it all a good clean and inspect. Likely that stud on the diaphragm is rusty and weaping.

Next question folks?

I’ve rebuilt one of the carbs but not the butterfly at the top of the carb isn’t moving freely. Any ideas??

2 possibilities- It could be that the Choke butterfly is fouling the acc pump jets (Little brass tube as you look down the throat), in which case, pop the top off the carb and reinstall with the butterfly in a horizontal position.
Did you realign the choke element with the mark on the carb body?
Only other thing that springs to mind, is the plastic liner inside the choke body, which needs to be positioned to allow the butterfly to operate

Many thanks for the response!
I will take the top off these evening and have a look inside, maybe something wasn’t lined up right?
I thought I realigned the markers so will also check that.
First time I’ve ever done this so fingers crossed number 2 goes a little more smoothly

I give up!

Complete rebuild, back on the car and still there is a leak.
One at the back of the left carb, one at the front of the right!!

Judgng by those photos, and having looked at a 36/40 PDSIT carb it looks like the petrol is coming out of the throttle spindle bushing.

But, there's quite a bit of it, and I would have expected bush wear to allow air in, rather than fuel out. Are you sure the float mechanism is working / set properly

Maybe you are best waiting for a type 3 expert to come along.....

Gasure used to do them, but the owner died, so I'm not sure if they are still trading

I nearly said to begin with that it will be the spindles. Standard leaking point. But then you posted photos and it was a bit higher up so I kept my lips tight!

FYI

Yes, Steve at Gasure passed away, one of his former staff members, Johnny, set up a new business http://vwcamperhaus.co.uk/ near Malpas in Cheshire. As I understand things he has not continued the LPG side of the business but he may still do all the other stuff
