Engine temp gauge

Post by Rob 400e » 9th January 2020 - 8:44pm

Hi all and happy new year. I would like to set up a temp gauge on my 411, thinking it would be good to know. The engines FI anybody fitted one in the past? I need to know is it possible and where to begin. I don’t think I’m experiencing overheating but wouldn’t know if I was. Any input would be great.

As long as you buy the Gauge & Sender that are compatible with each other, it's a doddle
Oil temp Gauge- Use a sump plug sender https://www.machine7.com/product.php?xP ... &xSec=2700 & Gauge https://www.machine7.com/product.php?xP ... &xSec=2698
Cyl Head Temp should come with a thermocouple that simply sits under one of the spark plugs but DO NOT under any circumstances shorten/ lengthen the wire- it works by sensing the resistance of the pre determined length of wire.https://www.machine7.com/product.php?xP ... &xSec=2700
M7 aren't currently showing the gauge itself, but ask them

Personally, I think Oil pressure is the best bet

Agreed, pressure is a function of viscosity which is a function of temperature, so in effect it's two birds from one stone

Oil pressure gauge, I can see the reasoning behind that. Where would you plumb a pipi into the system?

A T piece under the oil Pressure switch
There are basically 2 types of op gauge- Electrical & Mechanical.. sender for the electrical type is big & bulky, but it's a simple matter of threading 1 or 2 wires depending on sender, through the car to the engine bay. Mechanical types have no sender as such, but you have to thread a capilliary pipe through the car (& that will be full of oil) so you need to take steps to protect it
Consult the Haynes manual to ascertain your normal oil pressures & select your Gauge based on which one gives you an easy read of those pressures
Obvious places to look for the Gauge would be Machine7, Merlin Motorsports or Demon Tweaks

I would recommend the electrical type, mechanical gauges are good, but electrical are simpler in practice.

Whatever decision you make you the need to decide if you want the answer in psi or bar.

Plenty of 70's era correct electrical gauges for sale on eBay, if you get a VW/Audi/Porsche VDO gauge the senders are still available.
