New E10 Petrol
Sorry if this has already been discussed on here. If it has then I’ve missed out on it completely ! Got my weekly update email from Money Saving Expert which has a bit about some new Petrol described as E10 on Sale from 1st September. May not be suitable for about 600,000 Cars. It replaces E5 95 Octane which will no longer be available.
Can we use E10 in our Air Cooled VWs please ?
Advice is if you do not know then you must use more expensive E5 “ Super “ 97 Octane.
Please can anyone advise on this ?
Ta.

Re: New E10 Petrol
E10 will knacker every rubber component you have- fuel lines, pump diaphragms etc
E5 Super unleaded is the way to go
It should be marked on the petrol pump nozzle when you go to fill up

First I heard about it was this weekend when Lakeland Historic Car Club ( LHCC ) sent an email Petition about it out to all Club Members, which we are.

You're a bit late, E10 has been around for years on the continent- The Germans have been complaining about it for at least 5 years!

Re: New E10 Petrol
I have seen E10 at the pumps for most of this year. Lots of places have already swapped over, so you may have been using it unwhittingly. You can get 100% Ethanol proof fuel hose. Which will solve a lot of the issues, but there are a couple of diaphrams on carb cars that need looking after. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382955851220
This isnt a show stopper but it will take some management. I will continue to run E10 and monitor. Most of the issue will come from winter lay up. Ethanol is hygroscopic, so over winter it will absorb water and this will rust tanks and corroded aluminum carburettors. Now this isnt a new thing, and you shouldnt have just been parking a car up for winter as is. Preperation has always been key, the best thing is to drain all the fuel out and put fresh in for the new year. But alternatively a full tank of E5 super and the run back from the petrol station will be enough to get it throug the system.

Re: New E10 Petrol
I looked at Asda in Kendal this evening. Looked like all the Petrol Pumps were labelled E10, so I probably have used some unwittingly. I’ll try not to use it again and stick to only Super / Premium E5 97 Octane.

Re: New E10 Petrol
As long as its marked E5 on the pump, then its the stuff. Its more expensive that standard fuel

Re: New E10 Petrol
A completely non scientific reference. This hose was sold to me as fuel hose. Not as ethanol proof, not making any fancy claims. Its the cotton over braided stuff which has a bit of a bad reputation. I bought this 3 years ago and fitted it to the car 2 and a half years ago. Ive hve kept a close eye on it as an experiment. Ive covered about 4000miles while its been fitted. I recently replaced with E30 proof. But decided to cut this open and have a look.
No sign of deterioration at all, the hose is still soft and supple and was providing a good connection on to the carb.

E10 proof pump, so the only bit left is the accelerator pump.

Re: New E10 Petrol
Syphoned all the E10 Petrol out of the Tank of our 1966 Beetle and put it into our Audi A2, which now has a 3/4 Full Tank. Went to do the same on our 1972 Type 3 Variant but my Syphon Tube would not reach down the Filler Pipe and into the bottom of the Tank. The 1966 Beetle Filler Neck & Cap are of course straight on to the Tank, making it a lot easier. Gave up on the Type 3 then later realised the obvious. Take the Level Gauge Sender out of the Tank and Syphon it out through the top of the Tank !
Re: New E10 Petrol
You're lucky if you can find E5 Super petrol within easy reach. My nearest Esso station is about 30 miles each way and I'm not sure if they sell E5 away. Additives to neutralise the ill effects are the way to go it seems.

Re: New E10 Petrol
We have found several Filling Stations locally selling E5 Petrol. Esso, and Texaco both within about 3 Miles. Shell about 8 Miles. I’ve always relied on Morrisons, Asda, Sainsburys for both Petrol and Diesel, until now.

Re: New E10 Petrol
Got an email from Frost about an Additive called “ Ethomix “. £12.99 for 250ml but will treat 250 Litres of E10 Petrol. They charge £6.95 for Postage, so it would be £19.94 for 250ml.
Frost also have it on eBay at £144.99 for 12 x 250ml Delivered.
Seems there a lot of other Additives to protect against the E10 Petrol.
I’m thinking of just sticking with the E5 but which way would be better ?

Re: New E10 Petrol
Honestly I think its a bit over played. US has been E15 for a while and EU is mostly E10. I havent heard laods of complaints from them. Maybe worth a google. I suspect the problems only really set in during lay ups. regular use will mitigate.

Re: New E10 Petrol
Oh well ! Took the Level Gauge Sender Unit out of the Type 3 today, syphoned all the E10 Petrol out and put it in our Audi A2. Poured 2 Gallon Cans of E5 into the Type 3 then went out to get some shopping from Kendal, put some more Shell E5 ( V Power ? ) in the Type 3 and refilled the 2 Gallon Cans with E5 to put in the 1966 Beetle.

Re: New E10 Petrol
YEah, Shell V Power Nitro + (the silliest named petrol) is E5. If you want to be on the safe side, then you are doing right.

Re: New E10 Petrol
Remember that cars intended for the US market will have been built for that market so they will be fine. Cars built for mainland Europe or the UK will not take kindly to being served with E10.
Higher octane petrol (V Power, Super, etc) is labelled as E5 because that's the law but it contains very little ethanol and is the best solution for our cars if you can get it.

Re: New E10 Petrol
While this is true, was the US using E15 in the 60s and 70s? (I have just googled and it looks like it was 2001) So beetles an campers which were new in the 60s wouldnt have been designed with E15 in mind and will be facing the same issues as us now.JSR-69 wrote: ↑11th September 2021 - 12:44pmRemember that cars intended for the US market will have been built for that market so they will be fine. Re: New E10 Petrol
There's plenty of posts on the (mostly) US orientated vwtype3.org complaining about the fuel causing problems. Ethanol enriched fuel is not permitted in aircraft that can use motor-fuel (mogas). One local pilot showed off a fibreglass fuel tank which had been eaten into holes by ethanol enriched mogas.
