What distributor??

Post by Aaronslimvw » 23rd June 2023 - 10:44pm

Hey, I wonder if anyone could point me in the right direction?

I am pretty fed up of the stumble my 73” fasty has as you pull off, caused by the 009 distributor someone has fitted to it.

I would like to change it for the correct dizzy but confused as to which one I need. The car is a 1973 that has been converted from Fuel injection to solex carbs. Not fussed about having electronic ignition but want the vac advance back.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Any of the gemeric Vac ones that the usual suspects sell would be an improvement. If you want more original.

311-905-205L is a fairly common one which will work well with twin carbs. In period it was replaced with VW 311-905-205AB, Bosch 0231 163 008 > 311-905-205AC, 0231 163 018

VW 311-905-205G, Bosch 0231 137 017 or 018 will also work. Replacement part number VW 311-905-205Q, Bosch 0231 137 033.

Im sure you wouldnt struggled to pick an of those up and auto jumble. Strip and rebuild it to check bushes and springs ect. Then you should be away.

Any off the shelf dizzy’s that you would recommend? Is it worth while going electronic?

Ive never fitted anything new so cant comment. Pros and cons. Electronic ignition requires no servicing. And claims a stronger spark. Negative is, if it fails all you can do is replace (if you carry a spare at the road side) or wait for recovery.

I had one fail and it was pain, id rather thave just been able to change the condenser. Its up to you.

Pertronix do a nice ignitor that sits inside the stock dizzy - it is fit and forget - just take a spare rotor, points and condenser in the spares (just in case). 009s are so mis used sadly - the off idle stumble is no fun in traffic.

Danny has a 205T at a surprisingly reasonable price, but You'd need to explain to him how to suck on the vacuum unit as he's not mechanically minded!
My personal oinion would be to always go with points- electronic is a pain to set up from scratch, there's no indication of failure or means of testing for failure

The old man just told me he has a couple of old dizzy’s on the shelf in the garage we can try 😆🙈 , so shall have a go with them. Have also ordered a new electronic one to have a go with if all else fails. I’m in Tremadog North Wales Peter.

Might be too late on this one, but thought I would add to the electronic ignition debate.

My 912 had pertronix for a few years when I first owned it, had 3 failures, which were quite unpleasant (one massive backfire so big that it blew my rear seats forward!). I eventually fitted a 123 Ignition dizzy about 6 years ago, and it really has not missed a beat. Haven't touched it expect to check the rotor arm.

My Auto FI Square had issues last summer, one of the problems (amongst several) was a faulty contact plate. So I again decided to just go with the 123 ignition version (which they do for FI VW and Porsche cars) and it's been great so far. Absolutely no firing issues.

The drop in EI conversion (Petronix / Powerspark etc.) seem to fail at some point. The 123 ignition dizzy's are more expensive, but far superior in my experience/opinion.

Just to close this thread- I ended up fitting a petronix electronic dizzy , and it honestly has never ran better. Way better on fuel too ! Bonus!
