Electronic Distributor Replacement ?
Well Hello again from Down Under - The fastback has started to miss again & backfire, My Mechanic has stated its most likely the old points Distributor ( Points or Condenser ) he did mention i can replace it with a Electronic one ( HEI ) i woud like to go down this path so im hoping some-one can tell me which Electronic Dizzy to buy, he is 100 percent sure its the Dizzy as all other electrical parts are new, I did read a post about the Plus & Negative sides of a Electronic one, Any information would be of great help.
Re: Electronic Distributor Replacement ?
Pro is theyre maintance free, other than checking the timing when servicing. A better stronger spark.
Con is, if it fails, its a black box, you throw it away and buy another. If youre at the side of the road there is no fix. Unlike the old points and condenser which can be replaced and off you go. I fitted one to mine years ago, and it last a year then packed up. But the majority of people never have an issue.
You have two options, you can get a module which you install into your current dissy, or you can buy a comeplete EI distributor. Flamethrower stuff is plenty good enough, but there is a very good unit. Ive forgotten the name, but have just asked some friends if they remember. Will follow up when I have the answer.

The great thing about this is, it still reads the vacuum and modifys the curve to suit.

Re: Electronic Distributor Replacement ?
Hello, The Distributor on my 1970 Fastback does not have a Vacuum Advance ???? Should it have one ? i did look at a VW specialist on the web last night, its around $500 to $600 for a good Electronic one - i cant recall the name but it starts with a P im pretty sure, i think for now i will order a new Coil along with a new set of points, as im in the Outback it will take a week or two for them to get here. As the Coil & points did not get replaced when the motor was rebuilt so hopefully one of them is Faulty. Will post once parts are replaced.

You will have been looking at petronix. Yes it should have Vacuum advance. It sounds like someone has fitted a 009 to yours. The coil isnt a service item as such, are you refering to the condenser by another name? Changing the points and condenser is a good idea.

The port is on the left hand carb. halfway up. Hopefully yours has a blank on it. Otherwise you'll need to set the carbs up again as theyve been set up with an air leak.
