Type 3 door hinges.

Post by Danny Lord » 22nd August 2007 - 6:34pm

The hinges on a Type 3 door, can they be swapped over?

I have one door that has two hole's in the hinges for a Fast/Square so need to change it over to the 3 hole hinge, will it come apart easily?

the hinge that needs to be removed...

Is that a pin holding it together? dont want to start whacking it and damaging it!!

i've done it but feck it was hard work. I had to use an air chisel in the end because whacking the pin with a hammer didn't move it. There's probably a special tool for the job but if it's rusted in you'll be lucky to shift it.

Good luck

hi danny. you will have to get it pretty hot with a welding torch before you can shift it. the bottom one will be quite easy compared with the top one as it is quite close to the curve of the door.
oh and you will need some luck!!

hi dan, i take it that you are going to use a two bolt door on a three bolt car. namely a notch. i have never taken a hinge off a door but i'm game if you are! best thing is to practice on a gash door first. i have one at work that is in a pretty poor state so i'll get it home (where the welding torch is) and give it a go.
when i say hot i mean hot! cherry red i recon to break the seal on the pin.
and the right size drift.
i'll give the door a good look first to see if there is any difference between the fasty/square and the notch version. if you have any pins, that would be handy as i think you have to drift the top pin out part of the way and then cut it off to stop it from touching the rib of the door skin. you won't be able to hit the top pin properley from the top.

Danny,
there is,or was a special tool for hinge pins-i've seen pics, but not sure where!-might have been in the bentley manual,or oacdp..i'll have a look!

Ok,i've located one:Its vw751..but theres another somewhere-751 is a glorified punch,t'other one is more of a press/puller type thing-i'll locate it and let you know!
in the meantime, this'll give you a few happy hours of reading!http://oacdp.freeweb7.com/docproject.html

The proper tool is a screw pusher - a bit like a ball-joint separator. I've got a diagram showing what they use. Having knocked out a Beetle one to fit a door mirror back in the early sixties, it was hard work with hammer and punch, and I was stronger then - so was the car, probably!

here you are danny-from the bentley beetle manual
i've never quite managed to get my head around how it actually works
but i wouldnt recommend either bashing the pin out,or trying to drill it-there have been 2 broken drill bits in my beetle door hinge for the last 10 years or so !

well looks like a much better way to remove hinge pins rather than a lot of heat and a large hammer! may still need some heat though

hinge pin

Post by squarebear » 28th September 2007 - 10:35pm

does anybody know the dia of the pin, dia of the hinge body and lenth of the hinge body? if so i could make that removal tool or a prototype to see if it works, it may need to be a cast unit or even heat teated to take the load pressure, mild steel might just buckle, i've got some stainless which i could try first. if i manage to make one i'll get back to you for address and post it for you to try.

I guess the threads on the nut and bolt need to be pretty strong, or they didn't expect many garages to need to pull out 35-year old pins!

the drawing does show what strenth the bolt shoulb be, i think this is to stop the end going mushroom effect, i reckon the thread should be ok but like you say its going to be used on 35 year old cars, i think would be best, as was mentioned before, to get some heat in the hinge before using the tool, might be worth me making the top handle longer so you can get some good leveridge on it

Should be able to get a suitable 8.8 or 10K bolt for not much, I'd have thought. Still, you're the guy with the machine!

Folks,
I wonder if there is someone going to manufacture the tool?
Seems to be a very rare one ...
Cheers,

Has anyone ever installed new hinge pins? I have nos doors and nos hinge sets.

Any tips? Will the removal tool work in reverse to install new?

Thanks,
Lee
