Post by willriseley » 18th September 2007 - 9:09pm

Yes, there are/were a number of fibreglass sports body kits that used the Type 3 floorpan, but I don't think the pan is as rigid as a Bug one, so you need to think about how you're going to stiffen the structure.

I'm not sure where the extra metal is needed - the Type3 3 cabrios that have been made have something like 1.5" x 1" tube all round the body section internally, and they gave up as it was still too flexible.

Purplepeter is putting a glass body on a Type 3. Not sure how far it's got, or how secret it is.

What year/condition is your pan?
I might want to tempt you out of it ;)

Not that big a secret in the vw community, but in other circles its a bit hush hush!
And its a type 1 chassis,not a type 3 ![Image]

Now at the stage where it moves quite happily under its own power, stops, steers, all thats missing is the small matter of a windscreen&frame, door hinges, boot hinges
unfortunately, only 1000 of these things were built, and they were homologated,so eligible for historic motorsport,so parts are extremely expensive, and in very short supply
seemed like a good idea at first, but now its acting as a brilliant shelf for storing type 3 bits!

Type 1 chassis - sorry I forgot that detail!

And that curvy blue body... the errr..... well, I must have grown up with it, but I wasn't looking for one at the time, so what is it?

The second one is a 1972 Lotus Elan 2+2 fhc, lovely car,not worth a great deal though!its actually a metallic purple BMW colour.,restored about 19 yrs ago,

mine is the '63,series 1 elan, but dont all rush out to try and buy one-parts are difficult enough to get as it is!

plus two's on the other hand are easy-peasy-you can get a complete shell, with all its panels for about£300

Thanks, I need something earlier - ideally 69 or before.

Cheers,

Mike.
