Automatic Type 3
Automatic Type 3
Considering buying an Automatic '70 Type 3. Anyone owned or driven one before? What are they like to drive? Apart from transmission are they the same as any other Type 3 with regard suspension etc. Thanks Adrian
I've not owned one but I drove one across part of the USA to the 2002 Invasion. Very much like a manual, except you don't need to change gear. Steering wheel the wrong side of course, but yours is probably correct.
They all have the CV joint rear suspension so better handling than the early (pre-68 ish) Type 3s with swing axles.

Agreed, I had one for a short time and they are brilliant to drive.
The change is much better than modern autos I've driven, and mine went like a bomb!
I had no issues at all while I had it. I imagine if it does go wrong it's not easy to fix, but apparently they are bullet proof as long a they have been looked after.
The suspension is the same as a manual model on a 70.
There's no coduit through the pan for a clutch cable ,so you can't just swap in a manual transmission without making some sort of provision for it.
Go for it!

My 72 Squareback is automatic.
It's great to drive - the 'box changes gear very smoothly.
My only concern with it is that at some point I'd like to upgrade the engine and I don't know how much power the slush box can handle.

I've heard the autoboxes can handle quite a bit extra power.
Usually you just increase the fuel pressure on the pressure regulator in the engine compartment to maybe 32psi from the 28psi. The 1700 Type 4 uses the same injectors, though the brain isn't the same, so could be injecting for longer. Check the emissions is OK for CO levels.
