Converting Wipers from 6V to 12V

Post by Editor » 5th June 2005 - 1:11pm

Anyone give advice on what to do with the wiper motor. I've heard of:-
Get an autoelectrician shop to rewind the armature for 12V;
Fit the '67/68 12V motor which apparently goes straight in;
Fit a voltage dropper circuit (not just a big resistor!)

Any other realistic possibilities?
Dave.

6v to 12V wipers

Funny - I'm not doing that, but I guess someone was asking me back in June. Looks like the list gives a range of choices.

The easiest method is to locate a 67 - 69 motor. As you mentioned they drop straight in.
Be careful if you are converting a car with variable speed wipers.
The reostats weren't designed for 12v and burn out quickly.

sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but on a related subject -
i think my 64 is meant to have variable speed wipers - its a push button dash and where the dial to dim the lights is, there`s another dial below it which a manual said should control the speed of the wipers.

it doesn`t work, but where is the rheostat kept - in the push button console or in the wiper? is it fixable?

thanks. mike

No probs Mike.
I'm guessing the car is converted to 12v then...
If so the wire in the reostat will probably be burnt out. It's part of the switch and it's behind a white cover. The gauge light dimming still works as the current involved there is tiny.

There was a 12v switch assembly available at the time as 12v was an M code in some markets. I presume this would have thicker gauge wire in the reostat. Whether you could rewind it I don't know - too fiddly for me to attempt.

actually, its still 6 volt i`m afraid! the white cover, is that removable then?

by, the way, i`m slowly getting on with those heat exchangers - i`ll post some pics up next week - its mainly involved repairing the rear quarters at the moment, but its taken a sideline to my girlfriends beetle which has blown a plug out the head - just got to put the engine back in tomorrow, then i can get back on with mine!

i have converted my 6v wipers to 12v by removing the 6v motor and replacing it with later 12v motor. you have to re-position (drill) the holes to mount it on the motor plate and make up a new bracket to bolt it back on the bulkhead. the later motor plate and arms are not usable as the distance between the spindles is not the same, appart from the fact that the motors are mounted on opposite sides of the motorplate to one another.
