ignition timing problem..

Post by vwhotrod » 21st March 2009 - 9:10am

Hi!
I have a 72 fasty and i`m trying to get it ready for the season, but having some problems tuning it up. Im going to sync the twin carbs, but i want to make sure that the ignition timing is correct first.

My engine nr is T0986505, does that mean that i`m at TDC when i align with the left mark on the "belt wheel"?

I have a nother engine, but that has different timing marks than this.. weird!

And is it correct that i don`t need to sett the ignition any degrees in advance?

When at TDC, in wich direction should the rotor point? Right on the cyl nr 1?

if i look at this link http://www.hallvw.clara.co.uk/type3ign.htm
my engine nr is in the group with 0 degrees advance.. But my timing marks are not like the ones on the drawing.. And since my other motor has an engine nr that should put it in the same group, but has different timing marks im wondering whats right..

From the left; 1st mark is 0,
2nd mark is 7.5
3rd mark is 10

Time your engine to 0 degrees, vacuum hose on.

Put something long & thin thru the plug in the cowling-that allows you to line it up with the mark-I use a pair of verniers!

presumably your other engine only has 3 marks?

its 4 marks on both of my pulleys..

So the first mark from the left is TDC, not 5 degrees before TDC?

yes

And to answer your other question, when at tdc the rotor arm will point to No1 or No3 plug leads
