I would interested in what people have to say also as my carbs are shot!

It's an auto so not after power just to run and maybe save a little at the pump :)

Sorry for the thread hijack

I'm told it can be hard to get aftermarket carbs correctly jetted to run well and with reasonable economy. Without the stock air cleaner, you end up with very short air-cleaners, which affects the 'velocity stack', and performance is compromised to some extent.

I suppose you may get better performance but at the expense of worse fuel consumption, but I haven't got any figures to back it up.

You certainly hear very odd noises from some 'souped up' cars at shows - they seem to be struggling to keep running at all!

Ive got 40idfs on my 1776 and they run like a dream, not the best fuel consumption in the world but its not bad, i costs me £25 to fill up for a week to work and thats 125 miles. 8)

This is not totally set up either as I have a rolling road session on Wednesday to properly set it up now its been run in, so will have better fuel economy after that. I will post up the results ;)

I doubt you'll get new anyway - they need the aircleaner spike on. There's a guy who does a rather nice job of rebuilding - rather pricey though.

You need the throttle arm rebushed, I expect, but there may be other bits that need attention to make it a good job. I found the choke pull-down diaphragms were split, and that part doesn't come in a kit - had to do some surgery on it.

Someone with a small lathe might manage it OK - anyone locally do carbs? A classic car place might know, or look in Practical Classics. Maybe a local VW specialist (not dealer) would have an idea.

People are so split over this, new are shit and i hear the same about rebuilts,
im not to bothered about cost as i love my notch and just want to get back on the road! :(

The previous owner of my car had the carbs re-bushed by gasure..seems very good, needed stronger return springs,to overcome a tendency to stick when hot

Test fited the weber carbs, but on the passanger side it dosent clear the cooling tin. I use standard intakes..

Can i use the yee old hammer to make some room? I dont want to cut a hole in the tin cause of the oil cooler. Or can i make a spacer so the carbs sits higher? is there room for that under the engine lid? Maybe its not possible to use the original intakes with these carbs? Have an other set of intakes, but they are for a beetle.. Any ideas?
