.. regarding steering boxes .. is a LHD one the same as a RHD one ?

Also will a beetle steering box fit our '70 Squareback .. (cos they're cheaper !!

LHD is the same as RHD. Just turn the strap bracket the opposite way round.
Beetle ones are the same, but you'll need to use the Type 3 drop arm.
