Post by unclemoom » 9th June 2010 - 7:50pm

Right i want to convert my 66 squareback to a type one front end due to ground clearance issues and i think it would look bitchin with a narrower front end.
Where do i start?

basically use need to get a complete type1 beam with spindles, brakes, tierods, steering box etc and some steel to make the mounts or you could use bits from your old beam like i did.You can also use the type3 steering box but need the type1 pitman arm.you will need to raise your fuel tank up about an inch aswell.

It's not a quick job, however you do it. I'd say you won't be driving again very soon if you go ahead with the beam mod - and I hope you're OK with some serious chassis welding.

i did mine in a weekend but i was working on a bare chassis. make sure u use a king and link beam and cut off the sheck towers. use your top mounting on the framehead as a datum point and u will not have to raise the fuel tank. 65/66 bug tie rod ends are the best for this conversion the shouldnt need shortening i narrowed my beam by 4 1?2 inches and they were fine. if u want to run a steering damper i suggest u cut off the mount from the beam and use a bolt on one i got mine from ssp not only does it do the job but it looks good too. hope this info helps feel free to ask me any questions if u get stuck. u can see how my conv sits if u got the march issue of ultra vw its my fasty

i used a ball joint beam and the only reason i had to raise the tank was because the steering dampener hit the tank outlet.i could have altered the dampener mount but was easier to raise the tank an inch,Mine did mine over a afew days but i think it could be done over a weekend if you worked all day on it
