32/34 pdsit

Post by thebeach2008 » 17th July 2010 - 12:54pm

hi im still having probs with my carbs on my 2 ltr aircooled cu , i changed the gaskets on both carbs but the left carb when letting the electric pump fill the carb, starts pumping out of the little tube thats on the top of the carb,(where the air filter fits), it pumps out in pulses in time with the electric pump ticking , anyone have any ideas as its now staring top get me down , cheers gary,
i have four spare pdsits same numbers but the left carbs dont have a balancing pipe space , does that mean i cant use them as the one fitted to the van has the balancing pipe as a part of the carb body, im near breaking point now cheers

I think you may have found us whilst looking for a forum specialising in Type 25/T3's...We are type 3's & 4's!still vw,but ours are cars, not vans,so you may be better speaking to the t3 forum,or volkszone

Having said that,we'll assist where possible..a photo of your existing set up would help

buy a service kit for your carb. in it will be a new float valve. the fuel level on these carbs is controlled by how many washers there are that go onto the valve before it is screwed into the top cover of the carb so just take whatever washers there are and transfer them to the new valve.
what fuel pump are you using? if its the standard one then that will probably be ok but if you've just changed it for an electric one you may be suffering from too much pressure. these carbs are sensitive to fuel pressure. a regulator would help this problem.

hiya im such a div thought it was a t25 forum, thanks for the reply steve, i have taken the float from a spare carb and it seems to have solved the problem, however the tip regarding the washers controlling the float level is priceless, i would have bent it instead, all i have to do now is findout how to set them up correctly as they are racing away at the moment, thanks for the help and advise

these PDSITs are well known to be a bit of a nightmare to say the least. not at all economical on fuel either.
look for induction leaks on all gaskets and pipes. on type25s VW had a idle stabliser unit mounted next to the ignition amplifier in the engine bay. if you can get hold of a haynes or an autodata manual it will be a bit clearer.
its questionable weather this stabliser unit does any good and a lot of people disconect it.

run the engine and spray WD40 at the gasket connections in turn. if you see a marked change in the running you will have probably found one of the induction leaks. if it were me i'd remove the carbs and refit them with new gaskets and look hard at the pipes etc for splits and perrishing and poor fit. the slow-run or idle i think is controled by one screw i think on top of the left carb.

if all this is not what you wan't to cope with you can source a pair of webber ICT 34s. they will give you much better fuel economy and are easy to tune. i have a pair on one of my type4 engines and they work ok for me.

be careful that all the fuel lines are in good condition as like all VWs, you can have a big fire if things are not as they should be!
good luk. steve
