The car came with a Scat gear shifter, I have taken it off - the coupling the ball of the shifter sits in can move up and down about 6mm when I pull it up and down with some pliers? Should there be any movement or has a bush worn or gone. Should I get a stock shifter. When I took the shifter off there was a ring clip thing on the shift rod free to move up and down the rod, I guess this should be conected to something?
Any help Guys

Re: Gearbox grinding when changing from 3rd to 2nd
sounds like the bush has worn in the tunnel, the ring clip is from the worn bush.

You have to take the shift rod out through the front of the car.
There's an access panel on the front panel and a plate on the chassis - the spare wheel well needs to come out as well.
Undo the linkage at the rear so the joint is left on the gearbox shaft and pull the rod through untill it clears the worn bush.
Replace the bush and snap ring (available from GSF and the like) then assembly is the opposite of removal... but with a lot more swearing!
It helps alot if you can get someone to support the shift rod from the front while you guide it through the bush.
Its easier on a later car as the bracket that holds the bush is on a removable plate, so at least you can see what you're doing. On an early car you're working blind.
