Narrowed beams on a type 3

Post by ballbag » 27th September 2011 - 6:39pm

I have acquired a type 1 beam and I'm about to make it fit my type 3. Does anyone have any pics of how they've done it? I'm thinking of keeping the original bug shock towers. Has this been done?

Any pics or advice would be welcomed, thanks.

Look for "Blueridge"'s thread on the resto of his car!
He's a good engineer & used a donor type 3 beam..Obviously,dont use a good type 3 beam for the job

Speak to T3D. They've done a few now. I think the two options are, a) use custom adapter spacers/blocks or b) swap the framehead to Type 1.

I know I can buy a beam from slamwerks and how it all goes on. I'm just considering my options with making my own.

I doubt you'd be able to use the stock Type 1 shock towers, even without narrowing the beam!
Those I've seen have the upper shock mount on the inner wing with a reinforcment behind (I hope!)

Yea, I've seen Foxys and I'm considering doing mine like that but, you still have a lot of beam on there and that's what I was hoping to avpid really.

hey ballbag! i sell my t1 to t3 mounting brackets seperatly. these brackets can be welded to a stock t1 beam and then bolted to the t3 panhead. i don't think you can narrow the stock beam to much before there is interfernce with the inner fender and the shock tower.

I wouldn't use a cut up t3 beam to mount it as you then still have the low hanging framehead.
You could use steel u section cut fr the beam tubes and then weld the body mount tab on. Did you get a balljoint beam? As the tubes are spaced pretty much perfect for a t3

Right then dudes, here's where I'm up to.

I've started on my type one beam and, I'm wondering whether to take 50mm off each end, the centre, when I fit the adjusters or either side of the orignal mounts.

Now, to me it makes sense to do it when I fit the adjusters.

If I take it off each end, will I still be able to fit urethane bushes?

Should I stay away from urethane bushes and try to keep the bearings (which will be difficult when I start to weld on the shock towers)?

Questions, questions, questions, what would anyone on here advise on which way to go?

Bear in mind, this is not a daily driver, but I do want it to be comforatable enough to put my little girl in it.
