What gearbox oil ??

Hi

Can you advise me on what gearbox oil i should use on my 64 singleport notch please. Im doing a complete gearbox oil change.

Any tips to make the job easier aswell...

SAE90.

Thats what the later VW boxes take, and I can't think it'd be any different for earlier ones.

Its a bit freaky, but just yesterday I changed mine (a 73 fasty). Its meant to take about 2.5 litres.

Wear gloves - its very smelly oil, specially the old used oil. Lots of sulphur in it. You'll need a 17mm allen key (again, unless the early ones are different). Its the kind of thing G&S should stock. But your local tool specialist may be cheaper. When you get to 2L go gently with lots of pauses - let the oil find its way around all the cogs. There's no way to tell what the level is until it starts trickling out of the filling hole.

Used EP 80W/90 GL4.....hope its wright as im off to Germany for the Type 3 show in June. :)

And your right, gearbox oil stinks....

I would have been joining you but the engine is still on a bench in my shed. Its probably going to be back in the car this weekend, but there's no way I'm going to do 1000 miles on a brand new rebuild. Next year though ....
