rear wheel cylinder really the same as front 1302/03s?

Post by kyle » 22nd September 2012 - 1:38am

according to the cool air catalogue the rear wheel cylinders are the same as front 1302/03s. is this true or is it just a perts interchangeablity thing? like bug front calipers are interchangeable but not the same.

The Type 3 rear brake cylinder is not the same as the 1302/3 should have, as you can see by looking at the ISP West info for the Type 1 Super Beetle but I bet it's what they supply anyway.

some year Variants have bigger rear cylinders (I forgot which ones), I think those are the same as the 1302/3 front ones (part number starts with 36)

Yes, that's the 23.8mm bore... 15/16".

Odd fact:- USA never got the disc-braked Beetle.

Sorry for the thread hijack...

All type 3 rear wheel cylinders I can find are listed as 65 onwards. What's the difference with the early one and will a later one fit? Need a pair for my 64 Squareback - it has previously been converted to dual circuit if this makes a difference.

Thanks

Adam

hehe - Michael just mailed me to say they only had 1 in stock and weren't getting them until the end of June. Surely the ones they have aren't different from those everyone else has?

Issue is I've sheared off a bleed nipple on one of them. I might have a go at drilling it out, I know I have a spare one somewhere, but damned if I can find it.

Adam, the later ones as sold by GSF are fine - 64's had the same size cylinder anyway, but its a slightly different part number (no "A")
There must have been a detail differance to issue a surfix, but it's nothing that will stop it fitting or effect its operation - it could be just a change of supplier or a slightly different design of seal.

To be honest, I've fitted that 23.8mm size to Fastbacks and Notchbacks in the past when it was all that was available & I can't say I noticed a lot in it.
The master cylinders are the same between body styles, so presumably there was always a little bit more pedal travel on a Squareback anyway.
Single or dual circuit won't make a differance either.

Mike

p.s, I never had much luck drilling out siezed bleed nipples, and for what the cylinders cost its not really worth the bother.

Cheers Mike, that was kind of my hunch, I just needed a man of your superior knowledge to confirm. I can find the larger bore ones no problem.
