If any of you are struggling with cacky fuel tanks a great guy called James Wooton sorted out my Variant which had been in storage for years. It is very difficult to remove the tank and virtually impossible to get a new one. James drained the fuel took the fuel gauge sender out and flushed the tank with Swarfega floor cleaner! 6 Flushes later and the last of the treacle was gone. He then blasted it with compressed air and flushed with plain water. It has not missed a beat since.
Simple fix for a knotty problem.
Dirty fuel tank
Re: Dirty fuel tank
Type 4 fuel tanks - front axle out job.
Type 3 not so bad - fairly easily removed.
As mentioned elsewhere, the Type 3 vent hose on the filler neck is a common problem - it splits and lets mud and wet in. notch1500 (Simon) on ebay has replacements, or 1/2" breather hose and strapping or flexible conduit to stop it collapsing on the tight bend will do.
