Type 3 Equaliser Spring / Z Bar

Post by gracie » 28th March 2013 - 11:02am

Amazing what more work you can find when dropping the engine!! The latest issue is the Z bar / equaliser. The spring layouts on each site are visually different (and certainly in need of repair/replacement), but I am trying to establish what the correct position should be.

I have referenced a useful picture of the parts on Samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_ ... _id=966061 and the parts section on here for swing axle, hub and bearings, but still a bit confused.

Using the parts section numbers on here as a reference point - is part no 51 (the rubber item) fixed directly under the metal mushroom on part no 37, does it slide up and down and/or should there be a sleeve under the rubber part no 51, as suggested by this other picture on Samba http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_ ... _id=414433 ?

On my car the NS rubber piece 51 is fixed under the metal mushroom (possibly it has simply perished itself to the metal); the OS part 51 is wedged at the bottom through the metal bump stop on the axle. through which parts 37 'floats' up and down. Visually the bump stop on the axle on the OS looks to be welded at a different angle to the NS equivalent (which Im sure can't be correct). This has possibly occurred because the rubber item wedged at the bottom has bent it downwards over time.

All observations (and possible availability of replacement parts) appreciated!

Regards

Graham
