64 shell on 72 chassis?

Post by leec » 2nd August 2014 - 9:13pm

The 64 chassis on one of my Notchbacks is shafted. Can a later (72) chassis be used instead?
Not too clued up on type 3 stuff!!

Yes it will fit. You will need to use the rear subframe off the 64 if you want to keep the swing axle gearbox, or fabricate rear engine mounts for the body if you want the later box and rear suspension.

There are obviously legality issues if you're putting it on the road, but mechanically its doable.

No legal issues. Both the body and chassis are legal.

The '72 chassis will take priority for the vehicle ID, so the '72 number will have to be used. We've just been investigating what you have to do with a reconstructed classic vehicle - it takes its age-related number from the newest part and requires inspection at least by the appropriate club on the DVLA register.

The only legal way round that would be to use the floor sections to replace the bad metal of the old floorpan, in which case you keep the '64s VIN number and registration. With everything apart, it may be more straight-forward to do that.
Dave.
