Eberspacher
Eberspacher
Decided today I ought to look at seeing if my eberspacher heater worked. I was told by the previous owner that it worked but I have not needed it so I turned the dial on the dash and.....nothing, no green light nothing. Searched the internet and learned that the heater "pullup" by the handbrake has to be straight up. Tried that and still nothing. Gave it one last try and held the lever up as far as it would go, turned the dash switch with my other hand and the knob lit up?
Any advice would be great fully received and please make it as simple as possible or I look like buying a big coat lol

Re: Eberspacher
You might find a user manual handy
https://www.type4.org/manuals/ba4/index.html
Have a fire extinguisher handy, just in case the fuel pump or hoses leak. It would be a good idea to replace the fuel hose as well. Brickwerks have the proper stuff that handles ethanol in fuels, check what size you need

A handy supply of fuses might be useful too - mine often used to blow

Re: Eberspacher
I didn't intend to put you off.
Have a read of the troubleshooting section, it'll explain how it works.
Essentially, you need the fuel pump to work, the fan to spin, the spark plug to spark and all the safety gubbins not to interfere.
I haven't got the one in my 412LS working yet, though it is a summer car so not necessary. She's tucked away for winter now.

Don't worry about putting me off that's not hard lol. The heaters not a priority as its a summer car also but I was just curious . I`m going to have a look today and start with the fuses under the back seat and take it from there.
Another quick question. Are the door card rubber grommets the same as a beetle as they look bigger?

Re: Eberspacher
Did a visual check yesterday and everything seemed ok so I twisted the switch. Green light stopped on, fan was working and the low growl of heater was heard. I was sat in the car and with hand above the demister exit waited for heat.....nothing!
Got out of the car and noticed smoke coming from the back end.....oh my god!!!!
I`m guessing the smoke was from the unit not being fired for a while and the reason why the smoke was under the car and not in the car was because it looks like the pipes from the heater to the system are missing.
Does anyone have a system diagram???
Heart rate is now back to normal, car still runs this morning appears to be in one piece.
Oh and I`ve got my big coat out of the wardrobe lol

Re: Eberspacher
Not a lot more that I know about, here's a description
Diverted air from engine cooling fan over heat exchangers >
heat exchanger hose up to BA4 >
Air heated further when BA4 is switched on >
heat exchanger hose exit of BA4 to cable operated diverter flaps (that rust up) >
Internal routing to cabin distribution system

Re: Eberspacher
Just to say, the door card grommets are indeed bigger. The clips are bigger too. Sadly they're not terribly easy to get hold of but you can usually find some still attached to knackered old door cards!

Thanks richtbiscuits I had some beetle ones handy and yes they are too small. My door cards and clips are ok I just wanted to replace a few of the perished rubber grommets and was wondering if someone else had found a suitable one off some other model?
