412 headlights

Post by bloom2708 » 17th August 2007 - 2:55pm

I noticed my low beams are out on my 73 412 last night. Didn't have time to investigate. High beams work.

Are the 412 headlights sealed beam or can I replace the bulbs?

Does anyone have an online store that sells replacements?

Thanks!

They're sealed beams. Maybe Jane Terry knows equivalents.

Maybe I'm confusing the single piece lens and reflector with sealed beam. Seen them on the stand but not looked to see if the filament is part of the assembly.

Parts book lists both sorts.

Mine were sealed beams.

H5006 is the high/low beam outer lights (4001 old part no.)

H5001 is the high beam only inner lights (4002 old part no.)

I replaced all four.

O'Reilly's Auto parts had them for $5.99 each.

Can't complain about that price.

Managed to get some sealed beam headlights new from a motor factors £14.00 each did both types. The SP2 failed on headlights for the MOT but that one is definately not sealed beams so they are surplus at the moment.

If I remember correctly the Headlights from the early Mk1 VW Scirocco are the same as those on 412, as I remember seeing some and even swapped them over.

Perhaps worth checking out and possibly saving some cash as well.

412 headlights

Post by JSR-69 » 24th March 2008 - 12:10pm

The headlights on my 1974 412 are not sealed, they have a combined lens and reflector and standard halogen H1 bulbs in each. I have obtained new Hella units from my local motor factor for my conversion project, part numbers are:
Inners (main beam): 1K3 114 155-001
Outers (dipped beam): 1M3 114 178-001 with sidelight.

There is one qualification, they don't have the brass earth terminal fitted but they do have the cast-in stump. So it is possible to recover the earth terminals from the old units to transfer to the new ones. You will then need to carefully peen over the head of the pin to secure them.

I paid £115 for the set of four but this was a few years ago now.

Cheers.

A quick question whilst on the light topic, anyone know if the outer pair of lights are meant to stay on when you turn on the main beam or not as mine go down to sidelights when the inner pair are on?

Strangely enough on the Brasilia, which kind of shares the type 4 headlight clusters, you get both lights on with full beam. I always assumed the Type 4s would be the same..

Both my Brasilias have removeable bulbs, not sealed beams, but they are 74 and 78 so maybe the sealed beam units were on earlier type 4s, and halogens on later ones? Then again, maybe they just used a whole diferent parts bin in Brazil then in Europe!

Sorry if this is off topic - my first post here so don't want to do anything wrong!

Not off topic - nearest thing to a Type 4 and shares some of the parts. It's a bit of a hybrid, but unmistakeably VW.

Is just one pair of the lights only high beam, or are they all double filaments?

On mine both sets are single filament bulbs but I'm thinking that the small addition of a relay and I can rewire the dipped beam to come on with the main beam, the same way that spots/aux driving lights are wired.

This will throw a tad more light out in front on those dark nights.

I don't know if Baby's Canadian 412 had a different spec from new, or if someone has changed them.

I guess it won't matter to have dipped lights on at the same time, though it does double the load on some of the wiring. Oddly, that can adversely affect the total light output, as the voltage drop would be doubled, and that last volt or so is responsible for much of the light output.

Post by baby bleu » 29th May 2008 - 6:14pm

yes DAVE ,, the wiring is good for the double low beam,, and they have the same watts ,, total,, if you look in the haynes book ,, for the ,,usa model ,, ( canada and usa ) are the same excepted ,,california ,, the normal seal beam (4) has the same watts with the hallogen seal beam ,, 55 watts and 50 watts but the hallogen geeve the double of the clarty ,,plus that geeve white light ,not yellow ,, that was the original équippment ,, for the 412 -73-74 ,you can look in your ,,,m,, code for the 412 ,, they geeve all the information for that,, ,baby,

Hate to revive an old thread, but does anyone have a current supplier in the UK for 412 dipped/full beam and beam only headlamps, mine are rusty inside.

Thanks guys.

On my 412 I just got hold of a pair of Hella 5 3/4inch (think that was the size) H4 lamps and added an extra relay so that the car can utilise the dipped and main beam of the standard H4 bulb and then the inner pair of lights are just auxiliary driving lights.

Hello!

Here in Finland we just run 4*H4 bulk 5 3/4 inch Hellas and AFAIK that's from factory (H4, I mean), inner lights just don't have wiring for dipped beams.

Common modification here is to install wiring, a switch and relay to those too so you can use them if necessary. It's dark here in North (Statistics of today: Sun rise: 08:40, Sun set: 15:32 ... that's about 7 hours sunlight and it's only November).

By local legislation 4*H4 is street legal in vehicles older than 1980 (with some restrictions 412 stock lights fullfill, no problem). Not only that: You an add additional high beams (max ref. 10) if you want and who wouldn't? :o

Highly recommended BTW: 4 new halogens with some extra bright bulbs (Osram/Wotan NightBreaker or Hella VisionPlus +50% or similar) really makes the difference. Especially if the wiring is good so the voltage drop to lights is less than 1-1,5 volts (measured between alternator and bulb socket). Usually it isn't, but needs heavier wiring directly from battery and relays and stuff.

Still worth while if the car is driven in the dark.

Also a question: I thought sealed beams were and are US-only thing, not used in Europe?

PS. A pic of my -75 bus few years ago. And yes, that was totally street legal arrangement: 4*H4 and 2* high beams on the roof, all 7" Hella stock H4 beams.( EDIT: If done now, I'd use the bi-focus version of these.)
